In September, newly-appointed army commander Augusto Pinochet purges the military of Allende supporters. As Allende prepares a national referendum to end the dispute between his party and the opposition, the military stages a coup. During the attack on his presidential palace, Allende reportedly commits suicide. A military junta made up of commanders of Chile's armed forces takes control.
