Pinochet remains under house arrest, as the legal fight to extradite him wages on. Despite failing health, he releases a statement denying the judge's allegations and saying the charges against him are "being pursued clearly for political reasons."

Meanwhile, the recovery of the Chilean economy continues with export levels increasing and unemployment and inflation remaining low. Continued privatization of Chile's businesses during the 1990's also bolster the economy. Nonetheless, the gap between the rich and poor Chilean continues to grow.
