By the People Broadcasts Showcase Citizen Discussion As
a way of modeling civic dialogue and extending the reach of our project, By the
People has inspired five national and more than 100 local broadcasts since its
beginnings in 2002. National broadcasts are produced by MacNeil/Lehrer Productions.
These programs have been anchored by Jim Lehrer and other senior correspondents
from The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Local broadcasts of By the People citizen deliberations
demonstrate the wide-ranging programming creativity of our PBS station partners. PBS

By the People presented snapshots from its Deliberation Week citizen dialogues
in a national PBS broadcast that aired November
10, 2005. The program featured profiles of participants, highlights from their
conversations on healthcare and education, and a studio roundtable discussion
moderated by The NewsHour's Ray Suarez.

took part in By the People projects in
2004, resulting in more than 60 local television broadcasts.

2003, By the People's first year - the project focused on "America's Role
in the World." BTP-sponsored local dialogues, forums, and events on the subject
ranged from a theater piece produced in Juneau, Alaska, to a documentary: "Nebraska
Connects with Cuba." | | |
