THE GREAT SOCIETY: Term used by President Lyndon Johnson to describe his domestic social programs. The legislative agenda for the Great Society was outlined in Mr. Johnson's 1965 State of the Union address to Congress. It included the Medicare program for the elderly, new federal aid for education, an increase in the minimum wage, establishment of a Cabinet-level department of oversee federal housing programs and economic aid to rural areas.

BARRY GOLDWATER (b. 1909): Republican U.S. Senator from Arizona (1953-64, 1969-87). He was the Republican nominee for president in 1964, but defeated by President Johnson. Often called "Mr. Conservative," he is considered a philosophical godfather to supporters of President Reagan and other modern day conservatives.

JAMES BAKER III (b. 1930): He was chief of staff to President Reagan from 1981-85. He also served as President Reagan's Secretary of the Treasury from 1985-88. Baker was a longtime supporter of President Bush and served as Mr. Bush's Secretary of State from 1989-92.
