Return to A LOOK DOWN DEMOCRACY ROW

Project on Campaign Conduct
The Project on Campaign Conduct is an initiative that works to encourage candidates to run campaigns without unwarranted attacks.

The group works with candidates in Ohio and Washington State to have them sign a code of conduct that says they intend to run “a campaign with integrity and stick to the issues and refrain from illegitimate attacks.”

According to Program Associate Wayne Saucier, the organization relies heavily on the media to publicize when candidates have made these pledges, so an event like the DNC is a good opportunity to make contacts. “I was actually hoping to see more press come by,” he said from his booth on a quiet corridor.

The group considers illegitimate attacks those which are “based on rumor or innuendo, or that rely on unflattering and demeaning representations to get their point across.

So far this year, candidates from three congressional races in Ohio have signed the code. In order for the project to maintain its 501C3 status, it cannot publicize races unless every candidate has signed the code. The Project on Campaign Conduct is funded through an 18-month grant from by a Pew Foundation-sponsored group.
