The results were seen as a major blow to the presidential aspirations
of millionaire publisher Steve Forbes. Forbes had campaigned heavily in
the state where he had hoped to repeat his 1996 victory.
Senator John McCain scored well in the state even though the insurgent
candidate did not campaign in the state.
But it was the Bush campaign that could declare a clear victory.
"I'm pleased to announce that I came in first place in the Delaware
primary," Bush said while campaigning in Michigan.
"I'm honored by the vote, I accept the vote. I won the vote quite substantially
and I'm confident the news media will put me on the cover of every magazine,"
making reference to the fact that McCain has appeared on the cover of
most major news magazines following the New Hampshire vote.
How the result may effect the influential upcoming South Carolina contests.
