Conservatives Give Bush a Solid Win

February 29, 2000, 9:45 pm EST-- After faltering in Michigan, Governor George Bush reasserted his front-runner status by winning today's Virginia primary.

It was self-described Christian conservatives who propelled Bush to his decisive win - 83 percent of them voted for the Texas Governor. Among other voters, Bush edged McCain 49-48 percent.

Campaigning in Ohio, Bush said the margin of his victory indicated a shift in opinion towards his issues.

"Tonight in an open primary, by a solid majority of what appears to be 15 to 16 points, the voters of Virginia rejected the politics of pitting one religion against another," Bush told supporters. "Tonight we are one step closer to victory; we are one step closer to having a united party and we are one step closer to getting rid of Clinton-Gore in Washington, D.C."

McCain called Bush to congratulate him on the win and told reporters he was looking forward to the March 7th Super Tuesday.

"We'll look forward to Super Tuesday when we have a broad cross section of Americans all voting on that same day," McCain told reporters on his campaign bus.

With the win, Bush garners all 56 delegates to the GOP convention in Philadelphia.
