What I want from you...
New Jersey teens tell the candidates what they expect from the president

Al Gore and George W. Bush have both made promises to the people of the United States. I would like to see them come through with their promises if they become President.

For example, one of Al Gore's promises could affect me personally. He promises to make our schools safer by hiring more drug counselors and violence prevention coordinators, reducing class size, investing in after school programs, and creating second chance schools.

It would be great if he came through with these promises.

One of George W. Bush's promises is to treat all middle class families more fairly by cutting the maximum tax rate for the middle class to 25 percent (versus the current maximum rates of 29 and 31 percent).

Many families would be grateful is this proposal happened.

My personal opinion is that I think a president should receive some kind of punishment, maybe impeachment, if he does not fulfill his proposals and promises.

There is no current punishment, but if the president lies and does not carry out promises, chances are he will not be voted for in the next election. The American people do not want a dishonest person running their country.

If Al Gore becomes President, I would like to see positive changes in America. I would like to see all the promises he has made during the campaign fulfilled. I would like to see him make all the promises on education become realistic, such as making teachers pass a difficult test in order for them to become teachers.

I want to see schools that are dedicated to education, awarded, and failing schools closed, so that students are able to face the SAT's and be able to challenges boldly. I would also like to see schools rebuilt and/or renovated, and for teachers to have a higher salary, for dedicating themselves to their students.

On the other hand if George Bush were elected, I would also like to see him fulfill his promises about education, such as setting high standards for schools and ensuring school safety. I would also like to see him reduce federal regulations, and promote character education. I would also like to see him grant vouchers to families who pay tuition.

Another promise I would like to see kept, is the one about taxes. He said he would return extra tax money to those who paid it. He also said he would eliminate "death" taxes, reduce the amount of taxes paid by low-income earners, and increase child deductions.

These are the things that I would like to see happen if Al Gore or George Bush is elected.

I know it may seem impractical for any one person to improve America so drastically that it changes the course of history, but I am hopeful that our next president will at least attempt this feat.

I believe that our chosen president should be elected not because of their position in society, but for how they can change society for the better. This is an enormous responsibility for a very special person.

In the past few presidential terms, the presidents have been slack in fulfilling their obligations to America. Even though many professional political officials can easily manipulate my opinions and transform me into their little patriotic soldier, for now, this is what I believe.
