After 9/11, the newly created Transportation Security Administration began implementing drastic airport security changes, which continue to evolve: Off came the shoes. Travel-sized liquids became the norm. Gone were the days of saying goodbye to passengers at their gate. Fees were added. On planes, fortified cockpit doors were introduced, and pilots could apply to become federal flight deck officers, allowing them to carry loaded guns.
