Alan was trained as a molecular biologist, initially with an undergraduate degree from the University of Bristol, followed by two years of lab research in order to obtain an M.Phil from Imperial College, University of London. Drawn to the ocean from a young age, and unable to suppress his sense of adventure, he chose to leave behind life in the lab and volunteered to work aboard the R/V Odyssey as a Deckhand.

While a member of the crew, he looks forward to learning huge amounts about all aspects of living and working on a boat, immersing himself in cetacean biology, and experiencing field research first-hand.
