When the U.S. began shipping soldiers to Vietnam, this cartoon reminded readers that the French already lost a war on the same turf: the First Indochina War of 1946-54. Based on that war, France had advised the U.S. to stay out of Vietnam. Instead, America initiated the Vietnam War-also known as the Second Indochina War.
