Despite the repression of the post-war years, gay men and lesbians had begun
to organize. By the early 1960s, gay-rights organizations were engaged in a
slow but steady effort to win respect and acceptance. In 1969, the spark of
the Stonewall riots accelerated the pace of change, and transformed the face of
gay activism. Barbara Gittings, pioneering lesbian activist, was part of the
fight, from the "homophile" pickets to the front lines of gay liberation.
