Q: Why was Bunche, despite his
efforts, so loudly criticized by activists like Malcolm X and
Stokely Carmichael?
A: Many of them did not understand how you could
achieve something if you were not vocally involved, if you weren't
loud in your criticism. If you were not dramatic in your efforts,
that somehow you must be ineffectual. You had to shout and you
had to make a loud noise in order to effectuate change, and
I think that this would be true of Adam Clayton Powell as it
was of, say, Malcolm X. Therefore, they never were able to see
what it was that he saw and that he was trying to do. |
