Q: What is Bunche's legacy?
A: Well, I think Bunche's legacy
really is of an African American who was on the world stage
at a very important time in history, at a time when the globe
was really in very significant transition. Millions of people
were becoming independent, away from colonialism. The great
powers, of course, were solidifying a rivalry and so there were
tremendous, tremendous stakes. In the middle of it all was this
new institution, the United Nations, and one of the key players
in that institution was an African-American. So he was in a
very uncommon place in history and was able, therefore, behind
the scenes to exercise tremendous influence on some of these
events. |
