Hula Dancer who appears dressed in a kappa skirt.

Back
Engraving entitled “Isles Sandwich: Femme De L’ile Mowi Dansant.” In this wonderful picture sketched in 1819, the artist Jacques Arago records an unusual design motif with representation of goats tattooed around breasts. Often referred to as the “Venus” of Hawai‘i, it is a striking and poignant depiction of a Hula Dancer who appears dressed in a kappa skirt. Collection of Mark and Carolyn Blackburn.
