This self-paced course for preschool to grade 2 teachers provides a unique opportunity to view Engaging Young Learners with Informational Text: A Multimedia Approach with MOLLY OF DENALI™, an archive of the live PBS TeacherLine webinar that was authored and presented by Dr. Nell K. Duke on February 26, 2020. The course introduces why and how to effectively engage young children with informational text using a variety of resources—including the acclaimed children’s television and video game resources from Molly of Denali. Informational text helps young children develop world knowledge, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. Rising expectations necessitate children spend a substantial amount of their literacy time on informational text, yet many teachers want to know more about how to use this text type. This is a great opportunity to learn effective ways to meaningfully engage your children with informational text. Drawing from research and her knowledge of the Common Core State Standards and other standards documents, Nell K. Duke, Professor at the University of Michigan, will clarify what informational text is and provide targeted strategies for its use in the preschool to grade 2 classroom.

Engaging with Families and Communities to Support Social-Emotional Learning is the third course in a three-part series designed to support early childhood teachers’ and caregivers’ understanding of the social-emotional learning and development of young children. This short course is divided into three interactive modules to help teachers 1) understanding your families and communities; 2) learn what families and communities understand about SEL; and 3) discover resources available to nurture SEL in families and communities. This course and the full series was developed through a grant-funded partnership between local Grand Rapids Early Childhood Community Partners, Grand Valley State University College of Education faculty, Grand Rapids-based PBS station WGVU and PBS.

In this self-paced course, learners will explore digital stories, learn the steps in having students write and then create digital stories, and explore tools and resources for production. Learners will also consider how they might incorporate digital storytelling into their own curricula. At the end of the course, learners earn a Certificate of Completion.

Shared Reading is a like a gift—a big, wide, colorful umbrella which can hold under it so many opportunities for reading instruction. This self-paced course will help you transform your classroom reading community, while allowing individual learners to make steady growth in many aspects of their own reading development. You'll learn the nuts and bolts of this powerful teaching strategy, all while using our template and your own carefully selected text to develop a unique, week-long Shared Reading plan for your classroom. Throughout the course, you’ll observe other teachers in action, share ideas in a discussion forum, and get feedback from your peers. Everyone in the course will add his or her work to a resource bank which all participants will have access to for one year. This course promises to power up your instructional strategies while building joy and excitement in your young readers! By completing this learning experience, teachers will receive a certificate of completion worth 2.5 professional credit hours.

Science Inquiry with The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! is the third in a series of three courses that integrate evidence-based teaching practices using PBS KIDS early science inquiry content, with a focus on playful learning experiences and media integration. This hybrid course is divided into sessions that allow you to 1) learn online with other early childhood educators; 2) collaborate and deepen your understanding during an in-person workshop and 3) create and implement an independent project in your program. Through the interactive course activities, early care providers and teachers will explore their beliefs and understandings about technology and digital media use, and the ways in which you can use media and technology to support playful learning experiences.

Course participants can expect to spend 10 hours (over a 2-week period) completing course activities, including time spent online, attendance at the workshop, and final project implementation.

-Identify how children learn and develop an understanding of science and engineering practices over time.
-Define science inquiry.
-Explore the science inquiry process.
-Examine the connections between science and engineering practices and the engineering design process.
-Review strategies to promote science talk and conversations with preschool children.
