1946-1966: from CIVIL RIGHTS to BLACK POWER
Rioting in the 1960s

The first Watts Riot began just five days after President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act. Throughout the sixties, there were riots in some 138 cities across the United States. The uprisings involved close to half a million African-Americans, and left 250 people dead, 10,000 seriously injured, and countless homeless. Most of these people were black. The riots occurred just as horizons seemed to be widening for blacks.
