1946-1966: from CIVIL RIGHTS to BLACK POWER
The Last Poets: The First Rappers

The Last Poets began on May 19, 1968, when David Nelson, Gylan Kain, and Abiodun Oyewole read poetry at a memorial for Malcolm X. "What we wanted to do was to be disciples of Malcolm," Oyewole remembers, "using poetry to illuminate the same values that he planted in our heads, like self-determination and Black Nationalism." Frustrated by Martin Luther King's integrationist agenda, they were influenced by the more radical politics of activist groups such as the Black Panthers. The Last Poets wrote such widely sampled poems as "Niggers are Scared of Revolution," released several albums, and are widely acknowledged as the fathers of the Rap movement.
