Lawler was responsible for many of the team’s administrative needs
such as travel and transportation, housing and team meals. In addition,
as part of the Scarlet Knights’ coaching staff, he was also involved
in many phases of the Rutgers program, including coaching the post players,
coordinating video tape exchange, assisting with pre and post season
conditioning, and scouting opponents as assigned by Coach Stringer.
Under Lawler’s tutelage, the Rutgers post players gained skill
and confidence each year and continued to help the Knights reach unprecedented
success. With the direction of Coach Stringer, Lawler was able to secure
the finest schedules in the nation year in and year out. Last year’s
schedule was ranked the fifth most difficult by the ratings percentage
index (RPI) and prepared the team well for its march to the Final Four.
As one of the major aspects of his job, Lawler serves as the director
of the C.Vivan Stringer Basketball Camps and Clinics, which has grown
into one the largest on the East Coast under his direction, demonstrating
over a 500 percent increase in five years.
Lawler previously coached with Stringer at The University of Iowa from
1988-90 during which time he tutored current colleague Jolette Law. In
Iowa, he was part of a nationally prominent top 10 program which dominated
the Big Ten Conference. Lawler helped Iowa achieve an overall record
of 50-11, which included two conference championships and subsequent
NCAA Tournament berths.
Prior to rejoining Stringer, Lawler was the coach for the boys’ basketball
program at Johnston High School in Johnston, Iowa from 1990-95. He helped
establish the winningest program in Iowa with a record of 110-13, including
a 50-game winning streak, back-to-back state championships and one fourth
place finish.
A 1983 graduate of Northern Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in social
science and secondary education, Lawler also earned a master’s
degree in athletic administration from Iowa. Lawler began his coaching
career after graduation in 1983 as the head boys’ basketball coach
at Dows High School in Dows, Iowa. After one year, he moved on to the
Belle Plaine High School in Belle Plaine, Iowa where he was the head
coach for boy’s basketball and boys’ track from 1984-88.
A native of Eldora, Iowa, he and his wife Kim, have one child Morgan
Leigh, born December 20, 1998.
