- Wow, okay, now it's time for spotlight on the musician.
So dancers, turn around and face Tony T. - Thanks Tracy, that was so much fun.
For our spotlight on the musician moment, or mind on the music as we like to call it, we're going to write a song about the earth.
As you may remember from past episodes, we composed a short piece of music inspired by the planet we're dancing to.
When writing a song, however, there are different elements you need to create it.
Much like when you do a science experiment.
You need different elements to make the science experiment work.
Let's say, for example, you want to learn how to ignite hydrogen soap bubbles.
You need some soapy water, a flask, a funnel, and a cork and a tube.
A little sodium hydrogen sulfate, mix it around a little.
Two spoonfuls of sodium carbonate, one, two.
It's already getting bubbly.
And three magnesium strips.
Hydrogen gases release filling the soap bubbles.
Let it sit for a few minutes, and then we had our last ingredient, fire.
Now, remember when you're doing an experiment at home, always have an adult with you and wear protective gear.
(explosion sound) Whoa, that was awesome.
I hope our song can make as much of a bang as our science experiment did.
For our song inspired by the earth, we're going to use these five musical elements: a beat, a baseline, cords, lyrics, and a melody.
A beat is the rhythm of the song that drives the music along.
It's often played by the drums.
We were using a hip hop beat for our earth dance, so let's borrow that for our earth song.
In hip hop, the beat is often made by the DJ, or the disc jockey.
A good DJ will make it easy for a rapper to rhyme or flow over by dropping sick beats.
Not those kinds of beats.
Though, they do look pretty tasty and a little under the weather, kind of sick.
When you have a word that is pronounced the same, but it's spelled differently, it's called a homophone.
That's a saxophone, that's a sousaphone.
Homophone is spelled H O M O P H O N E, and it is not an instrument.
In this case a beat, like the one a DJ or a drummer would play, is spelled B E A T. A beet, like the one you grow in your garden, is spelled B E E T. Now that we've learned what a homophone is, let's drop a beat.
Seriously?
(rhythmic drumming) Thank you.
The bass line sounds down low, sometimes long or short, like staccato.
Look at me, I'm rhyming, let's show a picture of a bass.
That's not the kind of base we're talking about, that's a base like in a baseball diamond.
Do you remember the word that we just learned, for a word that is pronounced the same, but is spelled differently,?
Say it with me.
A homophone.
Excellent, I hope you said homophone and not styrofoam or saxophone or sousaphone or gramophone or something like that.
Now that's a bass instrument.
It's an electric bass to be more specific.
Let's throw some bass over that drum beat for a second musical element.
(bass guitar and drum beat) The cords are the third element to our musical structure and create harmony.
Harmony is when you combine two or more notes that are played together to create a pleasing musical effect.
Harmony is also a popular name for things like farms, people, blockchain, the list goes on and on.
But I digress, because the type of harmony we need to create our song is musical.
Let's put some electric piano chords down to that beat and baseline.
(electric piano, bass, and drums) For our fourth musical element, let's find some famous quotes about the earth.
William Shakespeare, famous playwright, poet, and actor said, "The earth has music for those who can listen".
Essayist, philosopher and abolitionist, Ralph Waldo Emerson stated, "Nature always wears the color of the spirit".
Beautiful, I love those quotes.
"The mountains are calling and I must go", is a famous quote by John Muir, the father of the national parks, environmental philosopher, and early advocate for the preservation of the wilderness.
And finally artist and conservationist, Robert Wyland, was famous for saying, "The ocean stirs the heart, inspires the imagination, and brings eternal joy to the soul".
There are so many other great people and quotes about our beautiful planet.
These four quotes though, I've found, if we put them together and tweak them a little bit, could work well as a rap.
For Shakespeare's quote, If we change the word, listen to hear it, that line hear it, rhymes with the next line spirit.
"The earth has music for those who can hear it.
Nature always wears the colors of the spirit".
"The mountains are calling and I must go", works perfectly.
So we don't need to change that line.
We can also shorten the next quote because it's a little too long to fit in the phrase of our rap.
Instead of the ocean stirs, the heart, inspires the imagination and brings eternal joy to the soul, we could shorten it to say, the ocean stirs the heart and brings joy to the soul.
Let's drop the beat and hear what our earth rhyme sounds like.
♪ I go, the earth has music for those who can hear it ♪ ♪ Nature always wears the colors of the spirit ♪ ♪ The mountains are calling and I must go ♪ ♪ The ocean stirs the heart and brings joy to the soul ♪ ♪ Whoo Our fifth element is adding a melody to our song.
When you rap, however, you're not playing or singing a melody, a melody has to have pitch to it.
Let's add a countermelody instead to accompany the rap.
(hip hop music) Cool, let's put the melody rap and beat together and learn our song.
I'll go first, and then you go, I go.
♪ The earth has music for those who can hear it ♪ ♪ The earth has music for those who can hear it ♪ ♪ Nature always wears the colors of the spirit ♪ ♪ Nature always wears the colors of the spirit ♪ Sweet, let's put those two lines together.
