(upbeat music) - The Epilepsy Foundation of Utah is holding its annual Warriors of Epilepsy Gala, highlighting and educating the community about the important programs and work the organization is doing.
Dr. Carey Wilson is here to tell us more.
Hi there, thank you so much for being here.
So we'll start first with the gala.
So tell us where and when that is and what will be happening.
- Yes, so the Epilepsy Foundation of Utah chapter, this gala is our biggest fundraiser of the year.
It is coming up on March 23rd.
We'll be having it at The Little America Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City.
So it's a chance to dress up, have some nice dinner, bid on some live and silent auctions, if you prefer.
It's gonna be a really special night, I think, to gather and support those affected by epilepsy, but also, you know, to raise funds for all the other resources that we do throughout the year.
- Right, and speaking of, I mean, you've got 30,000 people with epilepsy in the state.
- Yes.
- And you provide many services.
Why don't you run through what some of those are?
- Sure.
So throughout the year, we have monthly virtual support groups for teenagers, caregivers, adults affected by epilepsy.
We also have an annual seminar to educate people.
We can offer individualized and group training on seizure safety and what epilepsy even is.
Some of the more recent advancements is, after the pandemic, we've restarted our summer camp for children.
And as a pediatric neurologist, that's really exciting.
- Oh yeah.
- And then, the other piece that's been really important recently is the Epilepsy Foundation has made this huge initiative nationwide.
And in our state, we just got passed the Seizure Safe School Act, which educates all public school employees every two years on what seizures are and seizure first aid.
We've now also branched into law enforcement.
And even though this Seizure Safe School Act was just recently passed and started, we've already seen the effects here where I'm working up at University of Utah and Primary Children's, and it's really exciting.
- I know.
It's so good you're doing that.
It's really good, and I think you so much for being on.
And good luck with the gala.
- Thank you.
