Live from the Arena at Gwinnett Center, it's the 2007 GHC state basketball champion chips.
First up, girls quality action between the Merest War Eagles at 28 and five, taking on the St Pius Gordon Lions at 29 and three and a good afternoon, everyone.
I'm Dave Garner with you live right here on Georgia Public Broadcasting as we get set to tip off a full weekend of high school basketball action starting today here at the arena Gwinnett Center with quality in five, eight games.
And then tomorrow, a whole nother slate of single-A at triple-A and Macon.
This first game right here is a doozy.
A very talented Mary's team taking on their arch rival, Saint Pius, the team looking for their third state championship in four years.
Here to call it for you, Stew, Clyde Minnick and Cary Kessler.
Guys, our pleasure.
I'm struck by technique, along with my partner, Cary Kessler, of Fox Sports.
And what a game We have two great players, two tremendous teams, one huge rivalry.
It might not get any better than this in the state high school basketball team.
I'm ready for tipoff already.
You're going to see what seems to be a college basketball game, even though it is a high school girls state title matchup.
One reason is because two McDonald's All-Americans are in this game.
We start off with Mary's superstar, Drey Mingo.
She is a McDonald's all-American.
She's averaging 19 points, 11 boards and three blocked shots a game.
One NBA scout told me she could be the WNBA prospect of this McDonald's all-American class that features three players from the greater metropolitan Atlanta area for the starting line ups.
There you see some other players to watch, too.
Andrea McGirt, she is a solid player, a guard for the Marist War, Eagles five, eight, 14 points a ballgame.
But it is Drey Mingo, the player to watch at 19 points a game.
Well, as it everything entertainment and basketball, it's about the stars.
It's about the coaches as well.
Absolutely it is.
There you see Kim Hixson, her record, 116 wins, just 30 losses in seven years at Mary's.
You know how bad they want to avenge the loss last year in the state title game.
What you heard Curley talk about the great players, the division one player, Saint Pius, has a star of their own.
She can go to the hoop.
Yes, she can.
Her name is Kelly Kane.
Everybody in this area knows about her.
Everyone in the nation knows about her.
You know who else knows about her?
Well, Pat Summitt from the University of Tennessee.
She's already signed with Tennessee.
You see her numbers.
She's six six.
She can get the job done.
But there are other players on this team that you will need to look out for.
One specific player is a player by the name of Morgan Toal.
She is the point guard for this team.
She is just a sophomore.
There she is.
She's the top on that list right there.
Stu just averaged six points a game, but she runs the show for this team for the Golden Lions or Saint Pius.
Well, Corey, you look at those starting lineups, you look at these kids and what you see is good balance, senior leadership and some young players.
Stephanie done tremendous job and record 145 wins, only 15 losses in only five years at Saint Pius, one of the biggest rivalries, boys or girls in all of high school state basketball.
And you are going to see two stars of the future, one at the University of Tennessee.
I hear they're pretty good at women's basketball, the other an all-American going to Maryland.
What exciting hoop basketball we will have for you this afternoon.
And as always, we love having you right here on Georgia Public Television.
I'll tell you what, they don't do it anywhere any better than right here.
And this is going to be a tremendous game.
Yeah, it certainly will be.
You know, by the way, Stephanie Dunn played at the University of Georgia under Andy Landers.
She was on the 1995 final Four team.
She's going to bring a lot of energy to her state fire squad.
We'll see if they can get the job done.
Well, I don't know if you can tell.
We are getting revved up.
We can't wait for this game to get started.
We're waiting for the starting lineups.
By the way, our public address.
ANNOUNCER This afternoon, Dr. David Witherow, sir, with you all.
Mr. Witherow, take it away.
Let's get the started.
Right.
It's up there.
Let's get this game underway.

Bye sophomore Number 14, Christian Meyer at guard, a five high sophomore, number 22.
Keisha Davis at forward, a59 junior.
Number 32, Frederick Miller at Center six two, senior number 33 three.
Bingo Barrister's coach by Kim Hixson.
Now the starting line up for the second place Golden lions at guard now five seven Sophomore number four Morgan told that guard a six foot junior number ten first Tate and forward six to Georgia.
Number 24 Haley Marques at guard of high seven Senior number 31, Taylor Davidson and that sitter a66 senior number 52, Billie Kay Saint Pius is coached by Stephanie Dunn.
But it is those are the matchups the starting lineups coming up say Pius against Mary's quad Hey girl state finals coming your way and it's coming up next game six star West American Soundtrack Presents do what's best on PBS Notre game in five Saturday at 1030 on Georgia public broadcasting broadcaster If this program is made possible in part by Buffalo as a proud sponsor of the Georgia High School Association, Georgia's electric membership corporations provide reliable electricity and service not only to our communities but to the athletes within Georgia's electric membership.

This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station on moments away from the 20 Girls Championship St Pius against Mary's.
Let's send it courtside to Lisa Wiese, who will be covering the court like no one else.
Lisa, thanks to you.
Now you can ask anybody whether or not they care who they face during a time game and they're going to tell you no.
However, it is fun and an added bonus to play your arch rival.
Does that say hi for Mary?
Now, these two teams say it's a bonus because you know each other's strengths and weaknesses because we face each other during the regular season.
Plus, Mary bragging rights for a whole year during the regular season, these teams both split.
As you know, Pie has won the past Tuesday championship and Mary's is just excited to be here again today for another opportunity to win their school.
Its first ever girls basketball state title, Do, back to you.
Thank you, Lisa.
We're here.
We have it.
Mary's is in your Navy uniforms.
Take Pius in the white.
Let's talk about Corey.
Two big stars.
What do we look for?
Erwin Happy to be here for Mary's, but they want to get over the hump.
They want to get the job done.
They know what happened last year.
They want to get the job done and win the state title.
Bottom line, they'll do whatever it takes to make it happen.
What's your scrappy play on the ball by the ball handlers right here, especially Morgan Toles guarding the Marist Guards Saints highest scoring in America, man with pressure all over the court.
Mary's having a little problems early going, but getting it inside and trying to work it around up for the hook up and no good rebound.
Guess who's Kelly Kane.
Of course she averages 11 of those a game and that makes Pat Summitt happy as she happens to be tuning in St Pius with the ball trying to get it inside early jitters and a turnover as Mary's and Teresa Davis control up the court They go pressing the issue underneath nothing going yet for Mary's working around the perimeter a big big surprise team up and good fight for future Miller so Frederica miller with the hope no foul that Mary's has the early lead just what they needed to do want to put the pressure on start out early and put Saint Pius on their heels.
Mary's and the full court press and as Corey mentioned let's see where they do it and they're still saying pass the ball.
And there you see that full court pressure.
You'll see it most game long.
Mary's likes to put it on Saint Pius trying to say cool, trying to get the early jitters out of this final It'll be up to Morgan holds the ball with the ball hands right here She's just a sophomore Remind you of an Ivory Latta type player.
Look at that.
Whirling to the basket, just like her idol.
I will let him look at this, Corey, Both teams going wall to wall with full court pressure just what you expect in a state title game in front of the largest crowd.
And Tess is the only one to make it happen.
And Corey was talking about the crowd.
You know, this is a huge rivalry, folks, having an afternoon game on a Friday traffic.
Yet it is very, very nicely represented on both sides of the court.
Merest inbound again early going quality girl state finals two to the score Mary's pulls the trigger and same player still man to man very interesting that you see Drey Mingo from there being guarded by Kylee Marks, but not by Kelly King.
So watch that match up.
There's The Rock.
And Corey, I think the obvious reasons don't let any one of your stars get into early foul trouble.
Absolutely.
Kelly can't get to the foul trouble.
In the semifinal.
She had three was taken out.
They almost lost to the semifinals, but came back and advanced to the final crystal.
Tate triggers the ball in and just barely gets it in.
St Pius under control, looking underneath, but not to be looking for Kelly Kane.
And that is the theme that we are going to see.
Six six Obviously that's the match up inside and what a player she is.
Yeah, but it looks like Kelly Kane is nice and, and a nice block.
But what I was going to say was Kelly Kane is being, is guarding Drey Mingo, but not on the other end of the court.
Trey Mingo is not guarding Kelly Kane when they got Here's the block coming up and sometimes it's the little things you do in the big games that make the difference.
Mary's with the ball to great programs, two great traditions and one big title game under control weapon.
The ball is in the dirt trying to get it inside.
Merritt feeling tension against what now looks like a zone defense.
First thing pies way on top no good trigger pulled outside and not to be but Morris all over the court Senior getting to the loose Barnes rebound there she is again Kelly Kane Yes one reason why Maryland wants Drey Mingo because she can pull up from out there and hit that shot.
She didn't that time, slowing it down.
Corey Trying to get inside, trying to look for their big woman underneath.
Kelly Kane And so far, a good job defensively, as I say that what happens right inside and you see the left hand, the versatility all of these players you see very versatile with the left and right hand Marist on the attack, trying to bring it back against Tobias early going and a blocked shot there for nothing so pass over nice little going good to have you learn this afternoon here in good at for girls court a state championship and that is a big time play one of three blocks long three pointer yeah good try to get it in there was mine but not to the had at least early on inside and that's a little too easy and the foul and so Corey it's early in the game Mary's could be down five maybe six and if you don't get a hook in my opinion, coming back the other way, perhaps a time out.
But it's so early in the game, you don't worry about that.
And here she is, Kelly Kane, what a player she is.
And as you know, 12 points she had in the semifinals, as we just saw on the screen there.
But as you know, you play college ball, too.
You know how important the first few minutes of the first half are and the first few minutes of the second half.
So both teams trying to work out the kinks right now.
And take a look at Kelly Kane.
Now, you got a really six six and look at the touch with the screen.
Even though she missed one or two, still you can see she has enough touch.
Same pass, early game five, nothing in control.
Mary's looking for her first two against what is a tight, tight and pressure pack say pass zone defense nice defense there by Colin Marks They'll tell you a passing pizza zone and I'll tell you what's making the same Pius Zone defense tough is they're really blessed outside and there is the steal They're scrappy.
They can get that done and they pass the ball very well, Chris, to tape bringing it up, looking inside.
And why not?
Kelly Kane trying to post up trying to get position and she does and can't put it in trying for the rebound and look who pulls it away.
Trey Mingo That's the matchup you will see in the ACC and the SEC next year.
Mingo going to Maryland can go to Tennessee.
How about that?
There you go.
Charging for the woman and putting it in.
Miller That's what they need.
Gives her confidence, gives them confidence early on in the game that they can take it inside and score on Kelly Kane and now Kane going from a high post, going down low, not a bad idea and going to the line Charlie Match marks move.
So I like what they're doing with Kay.
They're putting her up high.
She passes it down low.
Corey Then she goes down low and it's very tough to double team her moving around.
The Court Absolutely.
And they know that they're going to key in on Kelly Kane.
So she will do the high loafing and look down low for Kelly Marks to boost with the first two.
And as Corey and I talked about early in this game, you do have the two stars to look at those other players who rise above the occasion for the extra points that put their team over the top set up.
Second was good Charlie Marks with averages ten a game.
She can get the job done, say PA still with full court pressure, but it has loosened up just a bit.
Mary's trying to get on track six to middle of the first quarter in the quarter, a state championship looking outside, tremendous move up to the hoop and not to be done, but I'll tell you just how Tamiko can put it on the floor right handed, left handed.
She took it in slice the defense missed the shot.
But you like to see that from your player who's a bigger player who can get inside.
I don't know if this is a good idea or a bad idea, but so far Mary's has been challenging Kane inside long three pointer, no good, good position.
And Mary's on the controlled break taking it to the half and foul and that will be she's up Davis going to the line early going if you're telling your team you got cagey six six in there do you tell your players challenge her and try to get her in a prosecution point or do you say, hey, look, if you can pull up, pull up.
I think you say Challenger.
She had three early fouls in the semifinals.
There was a chance she was going to foul out.
They had to stop her in and out of the game.
And it was a close court contest in the semis for, say, pies.
I like the strategy by Marist to attack Mary's early, going off to a slow start now settling down second foul shot up rolls up rolls and it is 7 to 4.
So highest by three.
So there you have it, up and down action.
You can see why these two players are going to Division one.
Schools were just underway.
Hope you're enjoying quad.
Hey, girls, High school championship.
We're back with more action Line four.

Welcome back to Quality Girls High School Championship Basketball.
Saint Pius up 7 to 4.
Early impression scoring.
Is this the way you thought it would go with Cain underneath really dominant so far on the inside?
Absolutely.
It was what you expected to McDonald's All-Americans.
They're going to try to get the ball inside to Kelly Cain whenever they can.
They have a taller team if they have to do high low with Kylee Marks, but they'll do that.
So far, it's working for them.
For them, they're up by three on the other side.
Trey Mingo, really impressive, has the size, but of course you can put it on the floor and I think that is what she's going to do all afternoon long.
And she should be one of the ones that will challenge Cain inside.
Absolutely.
She can put on the floor left handed.
She can put it on the floor right handed, and she's doing what she needs to do to attack Ms.. Now in a zone trying to combat Cain underneath.
But let's see what we got.
I think there's a clock issue.
Well, you know what?
I don't think the clock started when we came out of half, because it seems to my recollection it was 342 left and just a slight, slight.
A time flies occasionally and time stands still, but you still have to roll the clock.
So here we go.
Get it right.
Say pies to trigger.
And again, Mary's in that zone.
They're going to be looking for Kelly Cain underneath there.
You can see Mary's just a little tired.
Coleman, beginning with St Pius, are slightly better, but still they're taking it inside, which is what they need to do there.
They forced a turnover, but you like the thought by Morgan Toles to send that inside to Kelly Cain just didn't happen All that sometimes when you have someone so dominant inside, you're on that thin line of trying to force the ball in and trying to make good passes.
Correct.
And it looked like that that was a force.
But I still like the opportunity to throw it in there.
If you can make the right call, sympathize with the good man to man pressure defense.
They're looking inside HARRIS to their star, Trey Wingo.
And there she is nice and blocked in rejected Kelly can't do that she waits for the ball to be released from the defender's hand and has to go up the other side of the court.
She just she's very good at that.
She waits for the opportune opportunity to block it.
Nice.
BLOCK At the other end, Trey Mingo getting a piece of that.
Here we go.
It's like a heavyweight fight.
Throw your best punch off for Omar and let's see who's standing.
Remember these two teams met last year to their loss.
They want to win.
They're not happy to be here.
They want to win it.
Fake up, no good.
And that looks like it'll be same pass, forcing it just a tad inside.
But that's to be expected in such a big game in the state final.
Here comes the Corey Nice play Kelly Cain didn't expect it.
I think she thought she was going to go up for an easy layup.
Was it to be a fake?
She thought she was fouled.
Ref didn't call it, so we have to go with that.
Mary's in the zone trying to swing it on the other side and that's sometimes it's not a good idea as Mary's playing a good compact zone there, it's 22nd time out.
I think it's a great idea.
Slow down, mix up the defenses for Mary's look, no doubt about it can dominate inside.
But if you switch those defenses, you're just giving Saint Pius a different look every time down.
Absolutely.
And that's what you want to do.
You want to throw them off balance.
I really think that both teams are still working out the kinks, even though it's later.
Now in the first quarter, they're still have the jitters go in.
The crowd's here.
It's a state title game still.
You know about big games, a little bit nervous.
You get a little nervous, you get a little tight.
But as soon as you put that first shot up, soon as you make that first bucket, Mary's was slow starting, but they got a couple of hoops.
And now I think both teams are a little more relaxed and we should see some outside shots starting to fall.
Mary's in their Blue St Pius in there wide to tremendous teams.
As we mentioned, two tremendous players and Drey Mingo, number 33 in the blue to the iron, 50 to Kelly Kane on both ends of the court.
She's the big girl who keeps things clogged up in the middle for Saint Pius, trying to work it in, trying to look for a good shot.
Mary's working around with the long shot.
And another block by Kelly Kane.
That's two of my records right here for Kelly Kidd.
But Mary's comes right back and gets the bucket from Andrea McGirt, 14.
A game and the Great Inside.
Well, it's got to block a shot.
Don't worry about it.
Just get the ball back and put it back in Mary's active zone defense saying I'm trying to take that shot from the outside.
They're going to have to help here.
But that was the airball.
And here comes Mary's leading the way.
Davis tried to look inside up, and I think we have to travel.
Kelly Kane actually has three blocks already in this ball game, so she's a presence inside.
Nice move by Drey Mingo there they call the travel and here is the travel the walk up and good shot on, but not today because of the law.
If you have a big person on either side, maybe one of the best ideas is to try to run on.
As I mentioned, that's what both teams are going to try to do, hit from the outside.
And Morgan Toles just hits the jumper and that's going to force the defense out and may open it up a little bit for Kane inside nine six, Mary's up by 31, 23 left in the first quarter.
Nance trying to work it inside so far has it really saw that zone defense by surprise really A lot of stuff has happened on the loose ball way outside.
Trey Mingo does have the range, but not to be a surprise drive to look for a break.
But Mary's back on defense.
Kane now high going low mobile for a player of six six.
But look at this everyone on the weak side and now they even up the court.
So PIs now playing the hot role doesn't work that time.
Here comes Mary's trying to beat Saint PIs down court and that is a good idea It's a nice block there by Morgan Toles getting back on defense and stopping the threat by Marist McGirt with a nice try and a nice drive.
And I think that's what Mary's is going to try to do, what we call a controlled break.
When you have it, Cary, go with it and try to beat Saint PIs down court.
And that's exactly what they did there.
They still have the ball out of bounds, even for Morgan Charles with the block.
Mary's trying to look inside out high Domingo Mingo puts it on the ground and out and down to the floor.
And so far, neither team really got hot from the outside.
St Pius trying to break with the ball and no good and Mary's and now we're starting to loosen it up and up and down we go.
I love this action.
Up and down coast to coast.
They're not hitting the shot, but they're still waiting it out on the line in the first quarter.
That's my third G putting it up.
Kane with another rebound, he got to get back on defense and that is a foul.
That's going to be a foul on Mingo, and Miller will be going to the line to shoot to 17 seconds left in the first quarter, nine six, eight Pius.
Both teams call from the field, both teams feeling each other out.
So far it'll get a lot, lot hotter in the second quarter.
Shots will start to fall.
So what we what we generally expect from the boys in the girls in the first quarter, you don't care.
It's the game the mistake final where you come in you're just shooting lights out.
Exactly.
You you're you're going to find out what the soft spots are on the defense, you know, where they're really zoning you up, where you can't get into the cracks there, the crevice and penetrate.
So a lot of things to be worked out in the first quarter.
But I like the fact that they're laid out on the line there.
You know, they're not holding back anything.
They want to win the state title.
That's what it's all about.
142 And the countdown to the end of the first quarter, lots of action, not lots of hoops, but Mary's with 4 seconds and they're going to have to throw it up.
Just try to get a shot up.
And you know what?
They're not going to get it off.
But wow, good drive up and down.
The stars have shined so far.
What a game.
What a state championship game.
Girls.

Look at this crowd tremendous rivalry St Pius up on there is 10 to 6 early going Cary I think we're looking at the stars just really in the back of our mind thinking what would they do at the next level?
I think it's always interesting, whether it's a boy or a girl player, when they have more size than the opponents they go against to see how they'll do at the next level.
Kelly Kane six six Tremendous player.
It's going to be interesting to see how she matches up at the next level to see the players her size.
Absolutely.
Right now she's fundamentally sound with the right hand of the left hand, but she'll have to work on the quickness at the next level.
She will have players six, five, six, six interface, so she'll have to prepare for that.
Ms.
In that zone.
And there's what they can do trying to sneak backdoor up and no good.
Kane Trying to play volleyball with it and Mary's controls and that is going to be something that might be open for Saint Pius when so much concentration on Kane You might be able to go back to her and get some of those easy, absolutely insane passes used to doing that.
They go back to her, they go give and go.
They go high, low post.
They know how to get the job done.
If Kelly Kane is not lighting up the scoreboard, Davis With the control up to the floor, Mary's looking inside and looking for an easy shot, and that's not going to be easy.
With Kelly Kane guarding the basket underneath there.
She does fundamentals, as Corey said, getting those hands up and chipping the ball.
Ms.
Trying to look inside, trying to get a good shot and being patient so far.
And you have to like their patience.
Do you know that's that's that's a well-coached team foul and perhaps a twisted ankle?
No, she's okay.
Christa, take this and trust me to it.
Absolutely.
She hit a big three in the semifinals that helped Saint Pius advance to the state title game.
Without that three pointer with about a minute 20 left, they may not be here.
We're learning right now checking in for some Pius number 23.
Catherine Williams, who averages four points a game.
Saint Pius.
Impressive with some good man to man defense again Mary's looking inside and a mix up one more one way or the ball on the other hand Saint Pius control uncharacteristic mistake there by Mary's not too much loss just a possession but you don't like to see that if you're the coach Jim Hickson over what's Mary Simon Tremendous coaches in this game and there's another travel and coach Stephanie Donne I would say Pius so women's basketball in the state in very good hands to tremendous programs to tremendous coaches and so a boatload of talent so much different personality between Stephanie Dunn.
She played for Andy Landers, like I mentioned, at Georgia, but she has a different demeanor.
She's more laid back.
Maybe in practice she's a little more animated, but in the games she's very mellow.
Unlike Andy Landers, who is a legend himself, one of my favorite coaches, men or women, to cover Andy Landers.
He's done a tremendous job at Georgia Mary's trying to look inside, being patient.
As we said.
But I'll tell you what, St Pius and there's patience on defense to not going for the ball, staying back, retain inside guarding the hole and looked like it was going to be good but should by the and St Pius looks to on if they don't have it they wait to see Kelly Kane underneath and here's Morgan Toles running the show calling out the play remember she we might see her I heard her hero is Ivory Latta She needs to work on a shot a little bit, but she runs the floor like Ivory Latta does for you and see if she's just a sophomore inside for three.
It might be offensive.
Good position and nicely done.
Miller with the charge dropped in the charts.
And that's what you want to do one more time yet you see the replay.
She went inside and you know, the referee said that Mary's they were set there in the lane to charge and that was a dream come true for Mary's that they could get Kelly Kane in foul trouble low scoring game so far in the quarter championships and positive Mary's but it will heat up and fairly soon Mary's looking inside outside shots from the corner no good Mingo trying to pull the trigger that she missed She's got a nice shot So pass controls.
Yep you could tell her form is there and that's who those shots will fall inside.
And no getting so far and jump shot is on the endangered species list.
That's a good one.
I like that.
Can I use that?
Absolutely.
I remember one jumper outside 15 going in this game and most of everything else on transition and inside came with the rebound.
She tried to put it up and get it outside.
Controls and ponds will start again.
Mary's in their zone to the hole up and in no good as Williams pulled the trigger Here comes Mary's with the break that might think that's the best way to score it Why not Davis Nice move.
Only a sophomore got it like it.
You know, she was off balance.
She still put it up.
It wasn't exactly an easy layup.
She made it happen.
Got the bucket.
Ten, eight type ballgame, two point lead by Sam Price looking inside aggressive defense by Mary's.
Do you have to like that?
Listen there's an outside shot by Kelly Kane off the mark and I'm guessing somewhere Pat Summitt keep going.
I don't want her shoot Ellie outside 15 feet because she's six six.
Let's get her inside up.
And that change the shot.
I have a feeling you're right about that aggressive style by marriage.
Do you have to like that?
If you're a raw Eagle fan, you want to see Mary's attack the basket.
They're doing the right thing because their outside shots are not falling.
And McGirt will go to the foul line.
She can Todd if she hits two and there'll be a 22nd time out by saying five.
I like what Harris is trying to do when they can, but they want to try to safe fires.
Downcourt before Kelly can can get inside and redirect all the traffic.
Yep.
And they're taking good shots when they can get it and they're showing the patience like you say, when they can't penetrate inside and they don't beat them out on the break, they'll have paint.
Yes.
So patience.
Pass the ball, get the best shot available.
It's one reason why Kim hits to the head coach for Mary's has 117 wins and 30 losses in seven years.
She knows what to tell her kids to get to the next practice.
So Mary's with a chance to tie this ball game up at the foul line.
Aches and pains up there.
You see her coach, Kim Hixson.
One thing that I've never seen with surprises, I've never seen them get rattled.
Like I said it, the semifinals, they were down by three or four points with about 2 minutes left.
They never got rattled.
I was nervous for them, but they ended up pulling it out and they won by like six or eight points in that semifinal contest.
The group can't convert on the first shot.
Number two coming up to 14 points, a game up and Gilder hits a one point game.
It's got a lot of confidence.
Nice follow through on a jump shot, a free throw for everything.
We thought it would be a tight game, just the score, little bit lower than we anticipated but up and down the floor.
Fundamentally sound teams not making better mistakes, just not hitting their shots.
Mary's with their zone and looking inside to can.
Mary's collapsing up and no good came there for the rebound rebound get up and there is a chance for a three pointer and that's one thing that was developed by Kylie more group taking it inside.
She has got to do that continuously to become a threat and keep the pressure off of Kelly Kane on like the same passes is going to on offense they're doing that high low whether it's Kane going high or Marks Cruz going high and feeling it low it's a lot tougher to double team.
Absolutely, because you have got to honor those players that will penetrate and hit the bucket.
Try to convert the three pointer.
It is good.
And now Saint Pius with a timeout got a big lead but still a lead nonetheless Time out on the court and quite a championship basketball everything we hoped it would be and more Stay right there more action coming up right here as we continue with the state championships live from good afternoon.
Funding for this program is provided by the Georgia High School Association.
The GHC would like to thank State Farm for the outstanding support of high school sports programing on GPB.
State Farm is proud to be the official awards presenter of the GHC, recognizing outstanding achievements by Georgia's student athletes in competitive sports and activities, State Farm wants families and teens to always drive safe in your communities as you travel to work, school or play like a good neighbor.
State Farm is their home.
And welcome back to the arena at Gwinnett Center.
Beautiful day outside, beautiful day inside.
Hope you're having a good afternoon.
We welcome you to state high school basketball finals action this is the quad, as you see part of the St Pius crowd out there.
Great crowd here.
Afternoon game, big rivalry as equally represented as is Ms.. Any surprises so far besides the shooting, which can come and go in a big game?
Any surprises as to how our two stars are playing?
Not really.
The only surprise, I would say is the shots are certainly not falling for the Maryland signee.
You know, inside I really thought Dre would Dre would hit her shots and come out with more of a presence inside.
If you were coach and you know you're not shooting well, do you try to get more transition baskets?
Do you try to go to the hoop, try to get more fouls and try to go to the foul line?
Whatever works, you got to take it inside and in transition.
Like you mentioned earlier, if you beat them on the break, that's your easiest chance to get to the hoop.
Marasigan with the patience, trying to look inside.
As you can see, Big Kelly came down low directing traffic, talking to her teammates.
If they get loose, don't worry, I'll block the shot.
And that is huge for a team.
There she goes, contesting shot in good and well done by Whitney.
Hey, nice shot.
Nice arches.
She got it over Kane's outstretched arm.
It's funny, right, when you say, you know she's going to block the shot, it just so happens that they get one over her outstretched arm.
But it won't happen that often.
I can guarantee you that Kane inside, surrounded by four players from Mercy.
And they control.
Here comes the break.
Mary's on the run, Davis to the hoop, Davis with the hoop and she'll go to the wall.
That's the second time she's done that.
We've talked about that in transition.
Beat them up the floor and get the bucket here.
She gets the bucket and the foul, just like you mentioned.
It's what you have to do if you cannot go inside on Kelly Kane, one end, Corey Kane, quadruple team and get Mary's credit.
They got the ball, they got the turnover and they got the hoop and not the completed three point play.
But still, finally we have arrived and if the scoreboard here in the arena it says we are at a tie game at 1313.
So far I'm extremely impressed with Kim Hicks's coaching style, the scrappiness of Merit.
Mary's getting up the floor trying to beat Saint Pius down the floor for a transition bucket, and when they can't, they show their patience working around for a good shot.
Another turnover without a shot for Saint Pius and here trying to pull Kane away from the basket long long three point shot by Andrea McGirt.
We talk about her style.
We talked about her that if Drey Mingo isn't hitting her shots, it be up to Andrea McGirt averaging 14 points, a contest biggest game of her life tonight.
Well, one three pointer doesn't look right from the other end.
And there we go.
But no good.
And nurse, you can almost feel it tangibly.
A shift in the momentum as Marissa's patient trying to work your way up and look how far they are trying to take Kane away from the basket.
That's a great observation for her out as far as you can, let your guards crunch, try to go for themselves around.
Look, there's an outside shot and I say they're going to go inside a little.
The Oscars weren't giving out that long ago, but they're trying for an Oscar run down that would have been three free throws.
But not today.
But now face time to heat up just a little from the outside.
No worries.
Look, all the players are saying pies yet it is only the second quarter.
But still, Mahrez has taken a little of the momentum.
And I would have to say that Coach Hickson has told her players, Listen, we were here before this is what we have to do.
We have got to cook.
Kelly came out and we've got to beat them in transition.
They're doing both of them so far.
By picking Kane, a low 15 feet extended right from the basket, tries to drop back.
She knows what's going on.
Mary's very patient with the basketball almost Jony weave outside.
Absolutely And it's a good move because here you have the lead by three.
It's in the second quarter.
Take your time, get a good shot And that's what they did is blocked there.
That was a good move came in scintillating underneath and here comes saint comes on the break Look at that behind the back She'll do that right handed and left handed.
She is a heck of a point guard that might be a name to remember as the shot goes up wildly came off the rebound, tried to reset trying to get it out.
Shot is up, shot is no good.
But going to the foul line will be Kelly Kylie Marks.
But I'll tell you what, one name to remember and there are some big strong stars in this game, but to me, Morgan Totals is only a sophomore.
Corey Absolutely.
She has shown some style.
Absolutely.
I talked to her after the first round win that they had over Sprayberry.
She now coaches and teams are not allowed to contact, you know, underclassmen, but she has gotten a lot of letters of interest from all the major schools.
ARCC, SCC she is a player to watch in the future with Morgan Toles.
So verbally they can't contact you but they can send you a letter, every letter of interest, correct.
And that's what they have done with Morgan Chase, both shots.
Good.
So Mary's now up by one 1615 with 112 left in the second quarter of what has become an up and down action and some shots starting to fall from the outside.
Remember what we said at the outset?
You're going to feel as if you're watching a college basketball game because of the pace of this contest.
Mary's taking the time.
Good pressure by same powerhouse on the outside.
And there we go.
You see Kane away from the hoop and you get the feeling that Brittney Hagan eventually is going to have to take one shot just to make her rise.
She did.
And there's another block by Kelly Kane.
But you're right.
You've got to penetrate and keep the defense honest.
It was a good move, even though it was blocked.
40 seconds to go on this quarter end girls championship.
And there's the block, and she's had a ton of them.
Kane has won this first time out last time round one point game for anybody 1615 nearest and same prize to huge rivals and much more action coming out of the way.
Well this weekend of high school basketball championships.
Let me remind you, by the way, don't miss a live broadcast.

Here you'll see our slides.
Love high school basketball.
It's the best.
I mean, there's been so much more interest in high school basketball the last 15 years, and it is advanced, especially on the girls side of basketball, trying to wind down and knocked away bears.
Corey and I were talking about it before the game, and I've been here for almost 20 years.
I hate to admit Corey's been here an awful long time, and we can't remember when girls basketball as far as individually was any better.
I mean, great players all over the place.
Absolutely.
You got three McDonald's All-Americans from the greater Atlanta area.
We're going to get to see see them in this in the state finals.
And talk of Georgia public television.
You get the feeling Mary's going for the last shot of the half.
Great idea, controlling the tempo, looking inside.
If you don't get the hoop, at least make sure you take the last shot.
When I was at South Carolina, you know how we signaled that there were seven to go?
Everyone on the bench would stand up, if you will, on the near and that way you didn't have to look at the clock.
You knew everybody in the back standing up.
You just go for it.
Here we go with 9 seconds to go.
Ms..
Trying to get at least a good shot in and good and perfectly done by Davis.
Davis has done that three times and scored every single time she's taken it to the rack.
Good for her.
And Mary's playing to just the kind of game they need to.
They're up by three and a half still.
What a way to end the half.
18 to 15.
A perfect play.
And let's go to Lisa and see how Mary's plans to keep this lead in the second half.
So, chicken, you got to wait.
I'm talking to you before the half.
How did that writing it was that last shot at the back?
Davis The big pass all night.
Once again, we got foul trouble with Dre.
And I thought our young kids stepped up big.
Whitney Hagan has a shot from the corner.
Jason Vega Nice try.
As far as seven points.
She's got a rugged job.
It's far from over.
We got long.
15 minutes ahead of us.
Thank you.
Good luck in the second half, Coach.
Do back.
Well.
It is.
And as you see, everyone excited starting to get ready for the second half of what should be a tremendous two quarters of basketball at the half Mary's up on St Pius 1815 Quarter Girls High School Championship basketball more to come right here on GPB Elvis Live in Concert reunites Elvis back on stage with his original backup singers and band members in commemoration of the 25 years since his passing, this magnificent concert event took place at the Pyramid Coliseum in Memphis, Tennessee, Tuesday at eight on Georgia Public Broadcasting.

State Farm is their beat.
This is Georgia Public Broadcasting, your PBS station on your tomorrow halftime here inside the Arena, Gwinnett Center.
And a good game brewing in the first matchup of the weekend, the aquatic girls match matchup.
Again, Mary's leading it by three over the Saint Pius Golden Lions.
And a good afternoon once again, Dave Gardner with you right here at the half some good basketball and of course, it's wall to wall all weekend long live right here on GPB Saint Pius and and Marist, a storied rivalry.
Those two have played four times this year.
Pius leading the series 2 to 1, including the matchup that came in the region championship and hoping to make it three state titles again in four years.
But Mary's right now after trailing by four after that first quarter, really turn it on for a three point lead right now.
Let's go ahead, throw it back courtside.
Lisa Weiss is standing by.
Lisa, hello and thank you, Sue.
Joining me now is Joel Condon.
Father, How exciting is it for you to be here again, Marist High School in the finals for the girls basketball?
Any time we're playing St Pius for a state championship, it's exciting.
Let me tell you.
We're very happy to be here.
Thank you.
All right.
Thank you.
And we meet again as well.
We were here last year.
Steve, how exciting is it for Fi to be back here?
It's great.
It's it's always a thrill to reach this level in any sport, but of course, to compete against our close friends, against Mare.
It's.
It's a thrill.
Again, really unites our community And it was a lot of electric atmosphere around school today.
It's been wonderful.
And then what else on campus and as far as your program and your academics, how exciting is that too?
It's been great.
I mean, you know, when you have success and Father will mention this, too, is anytime you have success in anything, it carries over to the whole school.
And not only to just boost the morale of the whole community, it just seems everything takes off.
Our academic program has taken off.
Our athletic program is taking off.
And, you know, it's just it does a wonderful thing for a school to have this type of environment.
And Father, I know as well you guys are there for football, but I know actually academically, too, you have a great program as well.
Well, we were you know, we were always trying to strengthen whatever we're doing academically leadership programs, spirituality programs, community service.
We're certainly busy.
There's no doubt about that.
We unfortunately, we got spring break this week, so our cheering section is a little bit lacking, but we hope that that isn't going to be reflected in the score by the time the game's over.
But at any rate, as Mr. Spellman says, both of our schools, we're working hard at everything we do.
We're trying to be good Catholic schools and good academic schools.
So God willing, we'll continue to do that and we'll continue to be friends along the way, too.
So, yeah.
Thank you.
All right.
You.
And what do you think?
I know this is a huge rivalry, whether it's swimming, golf, tennis, it doesn't matter.
What does this rivalry mean to you?
It's a great rivalry.
It's a rivalry that's steeped in a lot of tradition and history over the years.
And any time we play each other, as father mentioned, we just go at it.
And and it's great because the kids know each other.
They've been in school since kindergarten.
Most of them.
And when it's over, they're good friends again.
And that's what you want about high school athletics.
Any predictions on who's going to win this game?
I'll leave it up to him.
Any predictions?
Any signs?
No.
I think a good Catholic school is probably going to win this game.
So I think you're right.
That's safe to say.
Thanks.
Back to you.
All right.
Thanks, Lisa.
Indeed, an exciting first half in the rivalry is on here tonight.
Let's go ahead, throw it back courtside.
Here to the play by play man at the table here, Stu quieted Rick and Corey Kessler, guys.
All right.
Thank you, Dave.
I think the best sign for anyone with any of these teams is the sign at the end of the game on the scoreboard.
Something for me and see if you agree.
Corey I think Kelly Cain has been more dominant on the defensive side than the offensive side.
And even though they're down by three, that has made a huge difference.
They're only down by three.
Absolutely.
She has always been a dominant force inside.
She'll block the shots and that's going to help them down the road, because I think that Mary's may see that and they may think that Kelly is not going to be that dominant on offense and it could change over for them in the second half.
But Mary's in transition, still getting up the floor, beating St Pius down the floor and the shots off the board here, three layups in a row.
They're up by three at the break.
I think that's been the interesting thing.
We were talking about it before the game.
I asked Corey, Give me the players who you think will make a difference other than the big stars.
And they have come up big, which means to me, look, if you're going to if you're Saint PIs or you're or you're Mary's, eventually your star is going to have to make some big plays on the offensive side of the game.
Absolutely.
Andrew McGuirk been playing very well for Marist and Morgan tolls very well for Saint Pius.
How about the highlights from the first half?
Stu It started out there.
You see Morgan Toles driving in like her hero, Ivory Latta from North Carolina.
But back comes Mary's.
They get the bucket inside over Kelly Kane.
But Toles once again driving the lane and getting it inside.
Of course, Kelly Kane was pretty good.
She's versatile, left handed, right handed.
She can do it all.
She didn't get that shot blocked right there.
And Mary's driving up in transition, beating them down the road and scoring the buckets when they could and when they didn't beat them down.
They certainly there's a big three point shot.
There's another drive inside over Heather Kane.
And there you see the field goals, not the best field goal percentage, but still Mary's doing what they needed to do to get the halftime lead.
And as we see the rebounding St Pius well ahead there, but I think a lot of those were Kane just getting her own shot and putting it back.
I think the interesting thing about those highlights, as we do look of those five blocks, I have a feeling Kane has about five of them, as you will see at the bottom.
I think the interesting thing we had ten or 11 highlights.
We saw two outside shots.
The rest were easy layups or transition baskets.
Absolutely.
I think we have a St Pius coach too.
Let's go down courtside and throw it down to Lisa.
Lisa what he got coached on.
It's a close game.
It's a three point game.
I know a lot different than last year.
What did you tell your girls in the locker room?
I told them to be more assertive offensively.
I feel like we're standing around a lot, you know, not really utilizing our strengths on offense.
So hopefully they'll come out and get moving offensively.
Defensively, I think we're, you know, we've done a decent job.
I don't like some of the the type of fouls that we've had.
But you know, I mean they've scored 18, we've scored 15, so well, good luck to you in the second half.
Coach.
Thanks.
Well, that's how I like it.
The bottle is half full, Good defensive set of bad offense.
We're ready for two great quarters of high school championship basketball and it is coming up in a moment.
Live from going at as Mary's takes a three point lead into halftime over Saint Pius each week.

Yeah.
Welcome back to Titanic here at Contact Center.
Our pleasure to be bringing you all the action in the quarter.
A championship ball game but partners Cary Kessler, we're waiting for two quarters of perhaps a little better shooting.
But you know what?
It hasn't been for lack of action.
This hasn't been a slow game.
It's been fast paced.
Just having been able to find the hoop.
If you like basketball, you like what you're seeing back and forth.
You want to see better shooting like you mentioned, but you like to see the back and forth action up and down the floor with high, low up and down fundamental good basketball.
Except for the shooting.
Mary's in the blue, Saint Pius in the white What's the zone defense Saint Pie's playing that two three very aggressive on the outside with that Kelly Kane guarding things close to the hoop and that is what she has been doing all game long with five big blocked shots in the first half looking to shoot from the outside but not pulling the trigger was Matt Miller.
And there's the turnover.
And the other way we will.
But I like the thought they will look for the back for a pass.
It would have been an easy layup if it was converted say pass, taking the time as well.
Looking inside to Kane, trying to establish something in the second half early.
She's underneath.
That's a high low.
We talked about still calling March two penetrates gets it inside to Kelly and she puts it in for the easy deuce.
I think we are going to see an awful lot of that in the second half.
1817 Nurse up by one skinny point with the ball looking to go inside.
And I believe that's probably going to be a back court call.
You would be right really talented you would think that's how Mary started out if you remember the beginning of the game got off to a slow start.
And now, lo and behold, second half starting off the same way you think maybe be a little relaxed.
Yeah.
You would think they were with a three point lead that's been trimmed to one by that inside layup still looking inside to Kane trying to get positions and gets that tight man to man defense against Ms. And that's what they're going to try to do is go back door nurse gets the turnover and here we go looking for that control great looking up court a back on defense so Mary's will look outside long jump shot is no good as Miller couldn't find the range but they get the rebound.
I like Trey Wingo I mean she is Mingo is just she's active she can put the ball on the floor.
She can do it all.
She's impressive.
She really is impressive.
And she's not hesitant to shoot it from three point land.
I got a McDonald's all-American will be attending Meryl next year.
Did you see that?
With the left hand.
Still, it didn't fall for her, but it was the right move.
Does she look like she may have been touched in the yard, but no call came with the rebound and St Pius looking to take the lead, looking inside another turnover.
And here comes Mary's with that control break chain is back Do they put it up?
They certainly do.
Good try no good off again team with a foul and get Ms.. Dre Mingo not intimidated took it right back up on the screen and that's the matchup you will see folks that are watching this game right now next year in the SCC and the SCC on how much these two players play is going to Tennessee Dre Mingo at the line is going to Maryland the shot up for a shot good Mingo with good hands drop that ball with one and one put it right back out Steph to have an S.E.C.
SEC big time challenge tournament to see that matchup Mingo averages 19 points a game this is the second but Rebound Mary's.
They'll take it back outside and set it up to the help and there you saw on that one as she gets ahead Kelly Kane trying to avoid the foul and not that but did you see the crossover dribble by Andrea McCook She crossed over kind of like Tim Hardaway used to in the NBA was a really nice move for the bucket.
There's Sunisa right there on number 15.
She is aggressive for Saint Pius.
She will take it to the hoop and she will make the defense be honest.
And he said to look for it.
And now it's a four point lead at the mercy with the ball and pressing the issue 516 U up third quarter action girls cross a basketball that was a lucky play.
There could have been a turnover but wasn't so high flying.
It's man to man defense underneath looking up in a tight spot tries to put it up and I think that's a trade lingo, but not a bad idea to try to draw another foul on Kelly Kane Absolutely.
Stu And I tell you, Kelly Kane played that very well.
She just kept her hands straight in the air.
She didn't want to pick up the foul, and it worked in her favor.
When you're six six, that's not a bad idea, say PIs, trying to get back on track offensively, working it around this zone Defense by Mary's to the hoop Kelly Kane inside and they can't find a good defense right there by Mingo who helped out on guard Yep and it was a good penetration move there by Morgan told she penetrated the defense collapsed on her that she looked for Kane so PIOs trying to get the ball in and they do a shot up on guard shots and when they were outside shot, fall for save, that was Christa Tate.
And there's a steal by Morgan Tall.
She gets four of those a game and then the pass but a good play there by Charles Crystal Tate getting that jump shots too She's the player we talked about in the semifinals here the big three to put Saint Pius back in the lead in the semifinals to help them advance.
And sometimes your defense will provide your offense and get your offense rolling.
And right now, Saint Pius looks like that defense is picking up their offense with the ball down by to try to tie this thing up or take the lead with a three looking inside to Kelly Kane mirrors his own He takes all the pressure on the outside Kane trying to move.
She's against the star Trey Wingo.
Mingo is trying box out long three pointer in and out.
Not to be good try by Kris to take now Mary's back to that transition trying to beat Saint Pius the floor.
They didn't but wisely they pulled it out and they'll be patient for trying to pull Kane outside and look at Kane trying to stay a little closer to the basket.
But there she is, nicely using the left hand Drake Mingo So fundamentally sound.
You love to see that if you're a high school coach or your college coach or for you little players out there, five, six and seven watch these players play.
They're fundamentally sound.
You want to you want to imitate how they play the game back and forth.
The game has gone to the hoop up and no good good drive but not today the by Morgan totals happen so often after you.
Perhaps, Mr. Short, you're frustrated.
Go after the ball.
They get a foul.
Yeah, you get a little bit knickknack foul and you know it's out of frustration.
Like you said, time out here in the third quarter as Mary's up by four on Saint Pius 23 to 19 with 328 to go.

Merit Step one Say prize 23 to 19 girls quote A state championship ball game and it has been everything we wanted.
So the shooting hasn't been that great, but the stars have shown up both ends of the court defensively and offensively.
And again, it is going to come down, as it always does on most of the defensive end and how it provides for you.
Absolutely.
Morgan Toles With the penetration will have to penetrate more to get St Pius back into this game and Marist should stick to the theme, try to beat them up the floor in transition and if it's not there, pull it out and show patience for the best shot.
If we're if we were playing tennis, which we're not, there have been a lot of unforced errors in this game.
The turnovers really a lot of time.
Corey, haven't been the result of pressure as much as just maybe nerves and bad passes.
It's very well set.
I could agree with you more.
Like you say, the best defense, the best offense or sometimes a good defense.
Mary's trying to take it to the hoop.
King comes over and she changes the shot, gets the rebound out of Bill Russell, would be proud about blocking it out of bounds.
And here comes Saint Patrick's.
Is that going to be offensive against Chris to take it?
Is not enough room to go in.
You brought up a great, great point.
Early going.
The difference between Dunn and Hixon.
There's coaches different personalities.
One's low key, the other is fiery, but it's works for the team.
Absolutely.
They have the record to prove it merits again, as they have been all afternoon, taking their time on offense and looking inside to their star.
If they don't pull it back out and look for a good wide open shot.
One reason why I think Stephanie Dunn does not get rattled is because she played on that 1995 Final Four team at the University of Georgia was Thunder round three.
As you probably remember, Steve, she knows about big game.
She knows how to help her team not feel rattled.
So would you say as a change block?
Roundtree I think a Richard Roundtree go ahead.
Again.
I myself, I don't know about him, so you have to film.
He didn't play ball.
He was saying, okay, Sam Harris That's all right.
Now trying to trigger it in 2319 with 247 left in the third.
And again, really just a bad pass.
I'm force.
Take your time.
Don't have to force it in.
And we go the other way.
It's still a four point game.
This is where you look inside to Kelly Cain.
She's Cain and Abel and very well said with Mingo trying to keep her off the block offensive fouls or different type call using the arm, trying to get her away and Jonathan Williams called for the foul and very closely.
Stephanie Dunn learned so much from Andy Landers at the University of Georgia, and she's transferring that knowledge in a different way to her players.
You see pipes now, Taylor Davison just checked in for St Pius.
If you see them run, there's a good reason she likes to run exactly right.
Stu because Taylor has signed a scholarship at Georgia Tech for track.
So she's a runner.
She was running during timeouts, so I was wondering what she was doing, say prize with the good defense.
Cain Challenging a shot.
Well, it was off the mark at St Pius looking for the break now looking underneath the Cain.
She's got it Good hands for players all over and that one was too press.
Well, now there's really a difference of philosophy there.
If you're a coach, do you want to see Kelly go right up with it or do you want to see her look outside to the three pointer?
My thought there is it was a good thought because she had four players on her inside.
Why not get it to the open player on the three point line and let her try to nail a three pointer?
Sometimes it's not bad to fake that ball outside, then take it up.
Sometimes players react and you have less than four players.
Maybe we have two.
Ms.
Looking inside now pulls it back out.
Nicely done by trade Bingo.
And you notice that was at the right hand.
She is right handed, but she is equally as effective with the left hand.
We've seen her inside with the left hand and lay up a few times.
And Mary's the third largest lead of 625 to 19.
Nice move to the hoop.
That's the track star still.
We talked about her.
Taylor Davidson's St Mary's again looking inside St Peters in there man to man defense and turnover Pius gets another shot to cutting into this sleeve Kim Hicks at 117 wins just 30 losses in seven years.
You talk about a dominant program it's Stephanie Dunn on the other hand we talked about her still 146 wins, just 15 losses in five years.
And a lot of these young ladies you will be seeing for years to come.
Some sophomores and certainly juniors came inside up and that easy and it is a two point game look for more of that you go to your star when you're down and towards the end of the game when we get into the fourth quarter, perhaps players getting tired, she might be able to take over underneath a little bit more nurse now looking inside to Mingo, their star, they got her on the low bar.
Kane tries to come over and help and a forced shot by Mingo.
And sometimes the intimidation factor of Heather Kane coming over.
She is six foot five, six foot six, and just her presence can create some intimidation there before Mary's with fair court pressures in the upper hand, now dropping back to three quarters, 30.
Kristen Meyer back in the sophomore for Mary's very smart player.
I actually asked Coach Dunn about her inside to Kane and all of a sudden two straight easy lay offs and she is taking over underneath as we have a tight ball game with 29 seconds to go in the third quarter, Mary's with the ball, taking it to the hole, taking it out there no good.
And change is dominating on both ends of the court and she is kind of a worse kind of foul.
So not a good looking at the foul, but you got to pop right in the nose.
Heather Kane's not messing around in there.
She gets the rebound.
It's her ball.
She's going to show who's dominant.
And Whitney Hagan is checking.
Kane And I am guessing after the last two trips they are going to be looking again down low.
To Kelly Kane with 10 seconds to go in the quarter.
Let's see what happens for a shot.
No good.
Mary's rebound.
She'll have one last shot.
And it is a long one.
No good.
And how about that?
After a three quarters of play up and down lead changes, quarter Championship girl's game is tied up.
Same and Mary's 2525.
I wish that I could fly to the sky using up my set subs I couldn't I was I wrote Annie Song when suddenly I was hypersensitive to how beautiful everything was by like a walk in the rain.

And I believe they're getting everything they expected 2525 marathon state passes huge rivalry coming down the stretch.
And I'll tell you this much look for Kelly Cain to take over offensively in this quarter.
Absolutely.
I asked coach Stephanie Dunn after the first round win as we watch the package working around what she told Kelly Cain about preparing for college Tennessee and she told her, you will eat, sleep, breathe, dream everything about basketball, so you better be mentally and physically prepared.
She better be mentally, physically prepared for the fourth quarter right here if they want to win the state title, Mary's in that zone.
And what Sam Price is trying to do is swing it so quickly that the zone can't move in time to find Kelly Cain, and that will help her outside.
Shot by Morgan Bell's only a sophomore.
What a big shot that was.
College coaches will be all over her when she is a senior.
She is quite a player.
And that was a great play from Matt for Saint Pius.
To keep Mary's defense honest, they'll have to come out on to the hoop nicely.
That's a big time drive by Trey Mingo and back to a one point game.
It is just what you expect to see from the Maryland signee.
The stars shine when the lights brightest.
Go figure.
Tighten the beginning of the game in the first quarter.
Now we come down the stretch and everybody's loosening up in the ball starting to fall.
That's what it's all about.
I love it outside.
Long shot, no good rebound Marist Taylor Davidson attracts her with a long three pointer and here they competing them down court That's the way it is Davis with the easy layup and all of a sudden Mary's back up by one.
Back to what was successful earlier in the game for Mary's to beat them in transition and get an easy layup outside long three pointer Mr. Chris to take my one know no problem Christa takes the one in the semifinals we talked about she will hit big shots when they need most two three pointers in the fourth quarter for Saint Pius and perhaps that will loosen up that Mary's zone.
Morris looking inside, I was going to say just before that, you get the feeling that the winner of this game is going to be the team with the ball last.
But if Christa continues to hit those threes, that might not be the case.
Mary's looking inside again, trying to pull Kelly McCann away from the hoop now, trying to post up Dre Mingo, their star underneath who's looking the can't get it.
So back out and go with the paint coming over and trying to help rebound and another if not Blockchain's shot there's an easy way to see if he can put it up.
There's truth in vision one players going against each other still.
Mingo.
Cooper Look and look.
He controls.
That's what you like to see two heavyweights going toe to toe.
Unfortunately for Trey Mingo, she couldn't get it.
There's the track star, Taylor Davidson.
She assigned to Georgia Tech for track.
But you know what's.
STEWART She can play some hoops in three big three point shots has turned this game away and allowed for same Pirates 3329 as they go up by four.
What a finish we should have right here.

Welcome back.
Memories down to St Pius and Girls Quarry State Finals 3329.
And you know Corey, I give coach Stephanie Donna same pass credit.
I mean here her team has had to hang all game from the outside.
Yup Ms. knows they're going to go deep from Kelly Kane honestly she said, You know what, if you have a shot, take it and it's worth Absolutely.
She shows the calm reserve on the sidelines.
She learned so much at the University of Georgia.
She's played in big games in the Final Four.
Like we said, 95.
She knows how to coach.
She also knows how to play Ms.. Now, with patience and the whole.
Do they ever need a hoop down by four 5 minutes to go fourth quarter state championship looking inside to their star Jarrett Mingo rolling three pointer off the rim and no good for McGirt and the other way we go and young Morgan Toles controlling things only the sophomore again keep her in mind for years to come.
Great player to the hook.
No good, but keeps it going.
That's the track.
Start out running.
The defense just keeps running against the stop.
Now St Pius taking their time, looking then looking outside the shot he times for Saint Pius They've done it all year and they're doing it again here And the biggest game of the season.
Who would have thought the way this game started that the outside shot would be a weapon so Saint Pius very good point.
Still we didn't see good shooting from either team in the first quarter and the half, but they're lighting it up right now, especially for so Pius Mary's taking their time but they were bring it down often bad shot.
Nick Kane changes another one and Kelly Kane with another rebound bringing it up and looking down and saint past They want to pull it out but the way they've been shooting the threes out of love, you're exactly right Now you start to think about every possession extreme really important.
3 minutes, 45 seconds left in the game.
I like the move there by Taylor Davidson, the track star trying to take it inside.
They've been hitting outside the defense honest but once again every possession very important do and here's the replay you see Taylor and then the block by Dre Mingo says get that out of here and it's a little early but Saint Pius is starting to spread out the court and it's not a star.
I'm sure they'll take a good shot, but they are looking inside and trying to go in and jump ball narrow this possession.
Marist think that was a quick whistle by the ref but a good call it will go to Mary's they got the rebound anyway so harm no foul St Pius now I like the idea of full court pressure make them bring the ball up take some time off the clock now the seconds become that much more valuable.
Absolutely.
Three and a half left.
Mary's down by seven.
One star shoots it, one star rebounds it.
Here comes that pass.
And they are running with reckless abandon.
Might want to slow it up for a better shot, but run out when you're out.
Harris Yep.
Not a wide shot by Morgan towards there she wanted to push push in transition and look at that still a ten second call on Marist mishandling the ball in the back court probably didn't realize seconds were ticking away.
That is a call you see very rarely absolutely I'm surprised to see it here, actually.
So Pius to pull the trigger and spreading that ball out good pressure by Mary's but with 304 to go you are going to have to call some turnovers and you spread that court out, which means Kane is going to have one on one coverage calls.
That ball is off and Mary's will come down trying to pull the trigger on a good shot.
The pick quicker to the hole.
Let's see.
I don't think that was shooting.
I don't think it was driving.
But there was a nice drive by one do, very nice drive.
She's trying and trying to draw the foul, take it inside.
The worst thing that can happen in her mind for Andrew McGirt, she said she goes to the free throw line.
She's not going to not in the bonus yet, but she hopes to win it.
They will be this year, St Pius don't do anything to stop that clock.
Good defense on the route.
Double how they got that ball in but don't try to get over can and right now Mary's pressing it so cars just looking for open opportunities taking it out.
One of the more impressive corners I would tell you on the day none of Stark yet but very person will be this young lady Morgan calls absolutely spreading the defense out right now going early we were tied up going into the third and this has been the highest scoring quarter so far.
And why not with the threes falling?
Okay, you're the coach here, Marcus.
What do you have to do to get back to this?
You have got to you have got to beat them in transition.
You have got to man to man defense.
You've got to create and force some turnovers and you have got to convert on the other end.
Bottom line, it's a track.
Meet them.
If you're Saint Pius, are you at the point of this game with a seven point lead and 225 where you're only going to say wide open layup, that's all you take?
Or are you going to still try to keep the rhythm of the game going?
I think you're going to try to keep the rhythm of the game going, but you're going to look specifically at back to work and high low, because if Morgan Toles drives in, I think they might even let her shoot that.
So patience keep the flow of the game going and look for a backdoor cut and if at all possible and you are spreading this ball out and you have gained one on one on the Lobos, just throw it down, get her the ball rolling it out.
And Toles is keeping control.
St Mary's doing the right thing, playing man to man.
Face up defense scrappy.
Try to force a turnover.
And they just did that.
Very nice for 5 seconds in the face of a play.
Yep.
Either way you got the you got the turnover.
Now you got to get a good shot and you've got to get it quickly down by seven with just over 10 minutes left.
Still time for Mary's.
But they have got to convert on every possession, virtually every possession and right now make it look.
That's a nice pass.
That's a great pass.
The younger ones to the ball, you don't have to take three pointers now.
You're going to play good defense.
Absolutely.
You can chip away here.
Well, the one we've been talking about and she is a big part of this team is tools.
And, you know, when you've got players like Toles and like Davis and that are so quick, it is so hard to press.
It really is.
But you know what they got here for a reason.
They did it on the last possession.
They forced a turnover.
Going to have to rely on that great man to man defense again, say pass with the inbound, getting it in no problem.
They're tape bringing it across the timeline and now we'll pull it back and whittle some time off.
Look at Mary's with great defense.
Great defense, good hands.
First the action.
Try to get the steal to throw with 144 to go 3635.
Anything can happen in the stretch run of this game.
But if there's a headline now three pointers out of nowhere for Saint Pius, I tell you what, this fourth quarter has been stellar for Saint Pius Hit those threes and there's the foul and I like the play you know you got to get closer to putting them in the penalty set to the line keep foul and keep hockey Toles trying to get it in someone has to help and there is the help you don't want to fall foul cargo marks, too.
She's a very good free throw Shooter Kane underneath came with the lay up and that is another big move that might have capped off a state championship of Saint Pius 3831, less than a minute and a half to go.
Great pass out Mingo.
Andrea McGirt to Dre Mingo great pass and that's what you have to do the foul said Pace to the line down by six with a minute 19 They're not at the line yet still they had a lot of fouls to give.
They had a lot of fouls to give us for saving the fouls.
Now, say players just spreading it out and it will be all a little bit of a high foul there, but they'll set it to the line and see if they can wrap it up.
You almost take a bucket.
There would have would have been the dagger.
So that's a good foul center to the line and hope she misses.
Catherine Williams would go to the foul line of senior 511 averages four points a game nice way to go out if indeed she does go out with a high school championship Great game what we expected it was a little slow in the beginning.
Heated up and we saw two stars, future stars and perhaps more.
When you look at some of these kids that are coming up and that will be recorded certainly in the years to come.
Absolutely.
You're talking about Kelly Kane.
She's going to the University of Tennessee she's over 52% pious.
We're talking about Dre Mingo.
She's going to Maryland.
She plays for Marist.
You're also talking about Morgan Coles, the point guard for Saint Pius.
He's just a sophomore, you know, from the 39 year.
Some substitutions, defense, offense.
What do you do, Stuart six point game a minute 12 left you go to the three ball if you try to go I have an open two and I can drive to hope.
I take the two and I press.
If I don't get a steal a foul immediately.
Right now this is taking too much time.
You've got you can't even set up, you can't direct traffic.
Just go to the hoop first because she averages 14 points a game.
She takes a long three good rebound and that will just about do it took a little too much time to perhaps get that ball to the hook.
But the way St Mary's is playing right now, I'm not sure it would matter.
Returning for two great seasons, every time we reach the finals of the state championship, you're going to want to do just that.
Great, great season.
Hats off to not only the teams here for American Saint players, but perhaps you heard at halftime, they both represented well, both on the athletic field and in and in school, which which is always terrific.
Absolutely.
You like to see them do very well in the classroom and in the field of play, wherever or whatever it may be.
And it speaks volumes about these two programs.
When you think about Saint Pius, the defending state champion, and of course, Marist was here last year, last year for Marist.
It was the first they had ever been in the state title game for girls basketball.
So it says a lot speaks volumes for both programs to make it here back to back seasons where you look at these rosters and a lot of sophomores and juniors.
So we're coming back to these teams.
And next, you know, this a young high school seniors, Kristen Meyer, a sophomore for Marist, along with Therese Davis sophomore, will be back.
Federica miller, a junior for Marist.
So perhaps you'll see these teams in the finals.
Morgan Toles, we've been telling you how great player she is.
She's only a sophomore for state.
Impressive, only a junior for Saint Pius.
One key note to throw out here, too.
I'm sorry to interrupt you is that Marist has only one timeout left.
Marist has one timeout left, Saint Pius has three and that will be key because Mary's is down by six.
I'm not sure how key it might be at this point, but it is a good point to bring out and say passes, I'm going to use any of their timeouts and Mary's is just to foul anyway.
Often in just a take solid game only a junior she'll get a taste of a state high school championship and what more that's what happens after that is good Mary's bringing it up now and just take whatever looks good to you when you bring it right up.
Don't have too much time to get off the shot left hand drive to the road and try to get fouled.
Won't get around.
There's the three pointer off and there she is again.
She seems to be everywhere.
Morgan Toles making it happen.
Well, Kelly Kane, as was dogged in and going to Tennessee, nice way to cap off a career state title.
Pat Summitt will get a hold of her.
She'll love to be a star at the next she it'll be interesting to see how she develops.
DRAY Mingo won't go out with a state title, but certainly she's a McDonald's all-American and what an addition she will be to already a great program.
Maryland Absolutely.
Two great additions to two great conferences, the Southeastern Conference, of course, and the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Things getting a little testy on the Knicks.
It also speaks volumes for Pat Summitt to go into the state of Georgia and pick up a player and actually know about a player and then have her sign with her university.
She's got such a name.
And Kelly King will be in addition to the University of Tennessee.
She's here in the cheerleader uniform this year.
I saw her.
I did see that.
I could say well, I did have to see that, but I did.
How about yourself?
Say pass and control it all the way to a state title.
Okay.
Turning 4133 West, about a half a minute left in this state high school championships.
Glad you understood why Jack was bringing you all the action from the Gwinnett Center.
Corey Kessler from Fox Sports South.
And as we mentioned, it was a game in the beginning.
Both teams came out a little tight, teams came out a little cold, not great shooting.
And then what really turned it around for this entire team, though, the outside three pointers, three of them in a row, and they looked like they were on their way to a state title.
Mary's trying to bring the ball up.
Good.
Something a good look at their lone three pointer doesn't catch on and same pass will go to the foul line once again.
This was a valiant effort by Mary's.
They gave it all.
They had it.
The shots would have fallen maybe earlier.
It might be a different story late in this game, but you have to feel good for Saint Pius.
Looks like they're going to go on to back to back state titles, their third in the last four years.
What an effort by this state PIs team.
And of course, Stephanie Dunn, you know, guiding the players and molding them in here for this first one off, the children.
The second one I like I like Mary's strategy.
Bryn Kane away from the hoop try to get baskets in transition here early early trying to make something happen on the defensive end.
It was working most of the game.
Like I said, you would have thought that the game was a bit more on the creative side looking dominated, but it really was a turnaround from the outside.
So one up second and good As the St Hynes bench starts to celebrate and Mary's will try to get one more hoop for the final score up and no good rebound Ms.
Clock clock counting down up and good.
There's that three pointer for Drey Mingo hasn't hit it all game long, but maybe a little too little too late.
Yeah.
If she has to be on the losing end to let her last to be a nice three pointer in the state finals.
That's true.
Although I think it pales in comparison.
She would love to have that state title, but she will have quite a career ahead of her.
Both of these young ladies will get shots at the next level at national titles when you go to a Tennessee or in Maryland.
But think about the high school basketball, the state of Georgia, still look at we're watching them.
Tremendous athletes, tremendous coaches fighting their players.
And a very classy move there by the head coach for Mary's, of course, Kim Hickson, substituting everybody, letting those players that are on the bench play in a state title game, even though they're not going to win it, let them have some exposure, some experience.
Stephanie Dunn to the same thing, brought some kids off the bench in another.
It's the last 3 seconds.
You can say you played in the state title game.
That's a countdown home stop on this game over 46 champions are safe Pius as they beat Mary's 4536.
And listen to this crowd You know you think about it as an athletes do you play college basketball?
I've played a little basketball.
You worked so hard year long.
You want your goal is to win the title, win the state title.
It's so many ups and downs in the season.
And finally, for Saint Pius, it comes true.
Mary's unfortunately didn't get the job done.
Maybe next year they could have another run to a state title possibility.
Well, there you see it, a mini dynasty going on at Saint Pius second straight and three of the last four, everything you'd want in a state high school basketball championship, Saint Pius 45, Mary's at 36.
We'll talk more about this championship game right here on GPB.

Lisa, thanks to Stephanie Dunn.
Congratulations on this win.
What can you say about these girls, the way they hung in there, fought for this home?
Well, first, I just want to thank God.
I mean, this team is incredible.
The character that they built over the season and, you know, the tough schedule we've had and, you know, they just have all the fire in the world on them.
They come out every game.
And I'm never worried when the score got in our favor because this team I mean they believe and they are determined to win.
And so it really paid off this season.
And I'm just extremely proud right now what you say about these fans when they showed up in full force to cheer on.
They do the same players community.
It's just it's incredible.
I mean, the support, the belief that they have and the girls and just the way that they pour out and really just give of themselves for this team is just incredible.
So I just thank the St Pius community.
Thank you.
What can you say about Coach?
And I know Mary's came here to play and they did such a great job, came a little short again, but thanks to you guys.
But what can you say about them and their incredible program?
I mean, you know, I have utmost respect for former some or to similar schools in a lot of ways.
And you know, they come out and they came out and they played hard.
And, you know, I just we were really great for great game.
And just the way the that they came out and they fought hard.
And I appreciate it.
Thank you so much, Coach.
Congratulations.
Dave Gardner, let's send it over to you.
All right.
Thank you, Lisa.
An exciting matchup indeed, a game that was tied, a 2525 after the third period.
Both teams finally poured on the offense there a little bit.
And of course, Saint Pius pulled it out.
That is their third title in four years.
Congratulations to the Golden Lions getting it done over the rival right there.
Of course, the American Lady Eagles.
Certainly nothing to be ashamed of.
They got to hang their heads here high tonight.
They had a great season, but in the end it was St Pius who picked up their 30th win of the year.
That's going to wrap things up for the first game of the week in the quarter.
Girls Championship goes to Saint Pius for our entire GB crew.
I'm Dave Gardner say in so long what a boys action coming up a little bit later on right here on GPB.
Stay with us.
