Ed discovers a book on the Himalaya's and becomes fascinated. Despite wanting to serve in the war effort, his principled father keeps Ed beekeeping. He escapes from home at every opportunity and learns the ropes of mountain climbing in the Southern Alps. Ed joins the air force. On his return, he meets George Lowe cementing what is to become a life-long friendship.
