Turning struggle and pain into an art that promotes empathy and happiness.
We follow Brandon Thrift's Spread Love art movement. During the height of the pandemic, turning struggle and pain into an art that promotes empathy and happiness, Brandon started painting "Spread Love" on anything and everything he could find - and didn't stop.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- I love to travel, I love to go, I love to experience.
I love to just meet so many different people and really kind of just take in what the world has to offer.
And I know that our time is very limited here.
So I wanna, (chuckles) I wanna capitalize on that, especially while I'm still young.
(bright upbeat music) So this is where everything kind of started.
(chuckles) Humble beginnings.
Oh, man.
So I had an old drum set that I wasn't using and I thought, I thought it would be a cool idea to paint that, use that and kind of just do like an art job, right?
(sighs) And that was the first piece I did, and it kind of just snowballed from there.
And I started just started painting everything I could, you know, go around the neighborhood on trash night, digging through the trash, paint whatever I thought would be weird, whatever I thought would be thought provoking, right?
As soon as I did it, I knew it was gonna be right.
It just felt right from the very get-go.
That was the drum I was talkin' about.
I wrote "spread love" on it and I brought it downtown.
And that was, that was that.
It was the beginning.
(bright upbeat music) I've always been into art ever since, since I was a little kid.
Ever since I can remember, I was just always creating something, hands-on, moving, learning, trying to just create whatever it was.
And then I kind of grew out of that, I think, as music started to take over my life.
And I was reintroduced to art the past two years, as people started to accept it for what it was, however that may be, however they interpret it, their energy was helping propel it forward and it all became this, this massive energetic force.
And it still continues to be to this very day, just propelling itself forward, simply in the name of love.
(gentle electronic music) - I think about it all the time 'cause it's just a good feeling.
And I walk the beach every day.
I walk Siesta Beach every day.
And the way it happened is that I was going down my little trail to the beach and I saw this "Spread Love" sign leaning at the entrance to the beach.
And I took a picture of it with the big blue sky behind it.
And I posted it on Instagram, and I said "Thank you" to the anonymous artists spreading love around Sarasota.
And I really had no idea, you know, if I would get a replier, who it was.
And within an hour, I had a reply with him thanking me and introducing himself.
- She has helped me see the potential of what I could become, what this could become.
From the beginning, I'm very lucky to have met her early on and she's always been there.
She's always there every day supporting me, cheering me on, helping me out, you know, shooting me ideas, brainstorming back and forth.
I get to ask her questions about everything.
And it's just one of those, one of those connections that's just happened so seamlessly.
(upbeat electronic music) - I don't know if he likes the nickname, but I call him like a, he's like a big lion to me.
He's just powerful and just very sweet.
And he beams and he makes other people feel that way too.
So he, he's bigger than life.
(chuckles) (upbeat electronic music) - If I feel something, if I want to do something, I'm gonna do it.
I'm gonna act upon it.
Inspiration strikes.
It could strike like a match any second of any day.
And if you don't act upon that, it seems as if it's a wasted opportunity.
Anybody can do this.
Anybody can start, anybody can start from anywhere, any skill level, any level of talent, (spray can rattles) just do it.
Just go, just continue, take the steps, baby steps one by one, one day at a time, that's all it takes.
(rhythmic electronic music) As an art form it has the potential to be a voice for the voiceless.
As far as mental health goes, you could make somebody's day.
Leaving a sign, having them react to it, having them be receptive of it, and relate to it, and absorb it and make it their own.
You could, you could save somebody's life.
You could change somebody's life in an instant, just by giving a little.
- I'm raising a 14 year old.
And then I know that Brandon's one age generation, you know, slightly older, but I think they're gonna change the world.
And I think that the people of my age and a little bit older are being brought along by the younger generation to just be more accepting and tolerant.
And beyond that, it's not just accepting and tolerant, but just really loving things that are different and people that are different than ourselves.
- And whenever I feel down or depleted, I (chuckles) give more because you get more from giving than just receiving anything on your own.
By feeding yourself, it's not as rewarding.
By feeding somebody else's soul, you in turn feed your own.
So that's it.
If I need, if I need replenishing, I'll fill somebody else's cup.
(uplifting music)
