I'M PHILIPPE DE MONTEBELLO ON LOCATION AT FRICK MADISON, THE TEMPORARY HOME OF THE FRICK COLLECTION.
LOCATED AT MADISON AND 75th STREET, MOST RECENTLY THE SITE OF THE MET BREUER, THE COLLECTION WILL RESIDE HERE WHILE ITS HISTORIC BUILDINGS ON EAST 70th STREET UNDERGO RENOVATION.
ONE OF THE WORLD'S FOREMOST COLLECTIONS OF EUROPEAN FINE ARTS AND DECORATIVE ARTS, THE FRICK'S HOLDINGS HAVE GROWN OVER THE DECADES, MORE THAN DOUBLING ITS SIZE SINCE THE OPENING OF THE MUSEUM IN 1935.
THE COLLECTION ORIGINATED WITH INDUSTRIALIST HENRY CLAY FRICK, WHO BEQUEATHED HIS GILDED AGE MANSION ALONG WITH ITS PAINTINGS, SCULPTURES, AND DECORATIVE ARTS TO THE PUBLIC FOR THEIR ENJOYMENT.
IN A DEPARTURE FROM THE LAVISH DOMESTIC SETTINGS OF THE FRICK MANSION WORKS ON VIEW HERE HAVE BEEN THOUGHTFULLY PLACED IN THE MODERNIST BUILDING DESIGNED BY MARCEL BREUER.
HERE THE COLLECTION'S HOLDINGS ARE ORGANIZED LOOSELY BY TIME PERIOD, GEOGRAPHIC REGION, AND ALSO MEDIA ALLOWING FOR FRESH COMPARISONS AND INSIGHT.
THEY INCLUDE WORKS WE ARE ALL FAMILIAR WITH FROM BELLINI TO HOLBEIN, VELASQUEZ TO VERMEER, INGRES, FRAGONARD, GAINSBOROUGH, WHISTLER, AND SO MANY MORE.
WHILE THE FRICK EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN SHAPED BY ITS COLLECTION OF PAINTINGS, AT FRICK MANSION SCULPTURE AND THE DECORATIVE ARTS ARE PRESENTED INDEPENDENTLY AS WORKS OF ART IN THEIR OWN RIGHT, WHICH THEY ARE.
TO HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF THESE WORKS, THE FIRST OBJECT A VISITOR ENCOUNTERS ON EACH FLOOR IS A SCULPTURE.
ONE OF THE MOST PROMINENT IS THE BARBET ANGEL, WHICH IS GIVEN CENTER STAGE IN A SPACE OF ITS OWN ON THE 2nd FLOOR.
THE ANGEL IS ONE OF THE FRICK'S MOST PRIZED WORKS AND POSSIBLY THE ONLY MONUMENTAL 15th CENTURY FRENCH BRONZE IN EXISTENCE.
CAST BY A CANNON MAKER THE BARBET ANGEL STANDS ATOP A COLUMN WHICH INVITES VISITORS TO MOVE AROUND IT AND APPRECIATE THE SCULPTURE FROM ALL SIDES.
THE THIRD FLOOR INCLUDES A SERIES OF GALLERIES DEVOTED TO DECORATIVE ART WORKS, ALSO OFFERED IN DRAMATIC DISPLAYS OUT OF THEIR USUAL DOMESTIC SETTING.
CONCENTRATED GROUPINGS OF CLOCKS AND LIMOGES ENAMELS OFFER A NEW FOCUS TO PRIZED 17th CENTURY INDIAN CARPETS.
PERHAPS THE MOST STRIKING IS A GALLERY DISPLAYING FLOOR TO CEILING PORCELAIN ORGANIZED BY COLOR, RATHER THAN BY FUNCTION, ORIGIN, OR DATE.
THIS BLENDED PRESENTATION SHOWS HOW STRONGLY THE EUROPEAN MARKETS WERE INFLUENCED BY EARLIER AND CONTEMPORARY ASIAN WARES.
ON OUR PROGRAM TONIGHT, WE'LL VISIT FOTOGRAFISKA NEW YORK, A PHOTOGRAPHY MUSEUM IN THE FLATIRON DISTRICT.
LOCATED IN THE LANDMARKED CHURCH MISSION BUILDING, THE MUSEUM IS THE NEWEST GLOBAL OUTPOST FROM THE STOCKHOLM-BASED DESTINATION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY.
THE BUILDING WAS RENOVATED BY ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN FIRM CETRARUDDY TO PROVIDE A MIX OF COMMERCIAL, GALLERY, AND EVENT SPACE.
THE FIRM WON A LUCY G. MOSES PRESERVATION AWARD FROM THE NEW YORK LANDMARKS CONSERVANCY FOR ITS WORK ON THIS HISTORIC BUILDING.
THE MUSEUM HAS PRESENTED A WIDE RANGE OF PHOTOGRAPHERS AND SUBJECTS FROM TAWNY CHATMON'S GILDED PORT RATES OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN TO THE PROVOCATIVE RECREATIONS OF BIBLICAL SCENES BY ADI NES.
FROM THE FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY OF ELLEN VON UNWERTH TO THE PHOTO JOURNALISM OF ANASTASIA TAYLOR-LIND, AMONG MANY OTHERS.
NYC-ARTS VISITED THE MUSEUM IN 2020 TO DISCUSS THE BUILDING'S UNIQUE ARCHITECTURAL PAST AS WELL AS ITS FUTURE.
>> FOTOGRAFISKA WAS FOUNDED IN 2010 IN STOCKHOLM BY TWO BROTHERS.
THEY'VE HAD OVER 250 EXHIBITIONS A THE THIS POINT.
JUNE OF 2010 THEY OPENED THE SECOND LOCATION, WHICH IS ACTUALLY IN TALLINN, ESTONIA, AND IN DECEMBER OF 2019 NEW YORK OPENED.
>> FOTOGRAFISKA OCCUPIES A NEW YORK CITY LANDMARK WHICH WAS BUILT IN 1894 AS THE MISSION HOUSE FOR THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH THAT IS DOWN THE STREET.
IT WAS AN UNDER UTILIZED NEW YORK CITY LANDMARK.
AND ONE OF THE REALLY EXCITING CHALLENGES OF THE PROJECT WAS TO TAKE THIS BEAUTIFUL BUILDING THAT WAS 126 YEARS OLD AND GIVE IT NEW LIFE AND GIVE IT LONGEVITY FOR THE NEXT TWO OR 300 YEARS.
THE ARCHITECTURE IS KNOWN AS NEO FLEMISH, AND IT REFERS BACK TO THE BEAUTIFUL GUILD HALLS AND TOWN HALLS OF NORTHERN EUROPE THAT WERE BUILT IN THE 15th AND 16th CENTURIES.
THE BUILDING HAS AN AMAZING LIMESTONE AND GRANITE FACADE THAT IS PUNCUATED BY LARGE, ARCHED WINDOWS.
IN THE RESTORATION, WHEN WE UNEARTHED ALL OF THIS BEAUTIFUL SCULPTURE, WE ALSO PUT VERY DISCREET LIGHTING ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING SO THAT YOU COULD SEE SIX FLOORS UP THE AMAZING ORIGINAL DETAILING THAT NO ONE KNEW WAS THERE FOR OVER 100 YEARS.
AS PEOPLE MOVE THROUGH THE SPACE, WHAT WE REALLY WANTED TO EMPHASIZE IS DIFFERENT TYPES OF PHOTOGRAPHY -- STREET PHOTOGRAPHY MIXED WITH FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY MIXED WITH LANDSCAPE, FINE ART, CONCEPTUAL WORK, REALLY HAVE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT FOTOGRAFISKA IN STOCKHOLM HAS BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL WITH IS EXHIBITION DESIGN.
WE'VE DECIDED TO ALSO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF HAVING THIS BUILDING AND BLOCKING OUT NATURAL LIGHT TO ACTUALLY USE THAT, TO ELEVATE THE WORK.
SO WE USE A LOT OF WALL PAPERS, COLORS, FONTS, TO FURTHER EXPLAIN WHAT THESE PHOTOGRAPHS OR WHAT THIS EXHIBITION IS ABOUT.
>>> ELLEN VON UN-WERTH IS MOST WIDELY KNOWN FOR HER FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY.
SHE AND NADINE BARTH, THE CURATOR THAT WORKED ON THAT EXHIBITION, CREATED THESE SEVEN DIFFERENT THEMES WITHIN THE EXHIBITION.
THEY EACH HAD THEIR DIFFERENT COLORS.
WE USED THE COVERS THAT SHE HAD SHOT OVER HER CAREER OF 30 PLUS YEARS, AND MADE THOSE INTO WALL PAPERS.
IT WAS A REALLY FUN AND DYNAMIC WAY I THINK OF SHOWING PHOTOGRAPHY AND IT SORT OF STEERS US AWAY FROM THAT WHITE CUBE MODEL THAT'S SO TRADITIONAL.
THE ARTISTS COOPER AND GARVER ACTUAGARVER -- GORFER ACTUALLY DID THESE EXTENSIVE INTERVIEWS AND PORTRAITS OF MIGRANT WOMEN WHO HAD TO LEAVE THEIR HOME COUNTRIES FOR VARIOUS REASONS, USUALLY DUE TO SOME SORT OF CONFLICT OR VIOLENCE HAPPENING AND ENDED UP LIVING IN SWEDEN.
COOPER AND GORFER ACTUALLY DESIGNED THE WALL PAPERS AND WE HANG THE PHOTOGRAPHS ON TOP OF THEM.
SARAH AND NINA REALLY WANTED PEOPLE TO WALK INTO THAT SPACE AND FEEL ENCOMPASSED BY THESE INTRICATE SETS THEY HAD CREATED AND THESE PORTRAITS THAT THEY PHOTOGRAPHED.
MARTIN SCHOELLER IS WORKING WITH A NONPROFIT CALLED WITNESS TO INNOCENCE.
AND WHAT HE DECIDED TO DO WAS IN HIS SORT OF QUINTESSENTIAL STYLE TAKE THESE UP-CLOSE PORTRAITS OF DEATH ROW EXONEREES.
BUT ACTUALLY HE FILMED THE SITTERS, THEY'RE SLIGHTLY MOVING, AND IT IS A VIDEO INSTALLATION.
HE DECIDED TO ALSO RECORD THEIR STORIES, SO YOU'RE HEARING FROM THEIR OWN WORDS WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO BE ARRESTED, GO ON TRIAL, BE CONVICTED, AND LIVE ON DEATH ROW FOR CRIMES THEY DID NOT COMMIT.
>> AND I SAY REAL LOUD, I DON'T WANT TO DIE.
>> AS YOU MOVE THROUGH THE EXHIBITION, WHAT WE ACTUALLY DECIDED TO DO WAS CREATE THIS SENSE OF TIGHT SORT OF INTIMACY GETTING, YOU KNOW, EVEN CLOSER AND CLOSER TO ALMOST WHAT A DEATH ROW CELL LOOKS LIKE, SO THAT PEOPLE REALLY GET A SENSE OF WHAT THEIR LIVES WERE LIKE WHILE THEY WERE INCARCERATED.
WE HAVE SOME LOCAL EXHIBITIONS THAT DON'T TOUR TO THE OTHER LOCATIONS, SPECIFIC ARTISTS THAT ARE DEALING WITH VERY RELEVANT ISSUES TO NEW YORK OR TO AMERICA.
LARRY FINK IS ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS PHOTOGRAPHERS OF HIS GENERATION, MAINLY IN STREET PHOTOGRAPHY.
LARRY FINK ACTUALLY CONTACTED US AND SAID, I REALLY LOVE YOUR -- THE PROGRAM THAT YOU'RE DOING CALLED PHOTOGRAPHERS ON THE FRONT LINES.
AND THIS WAS WHEN WE REALLY HANDED OVER OUR PLATFORMS TO PHOTOGRAPHERS THAT WERE PHOTOGRAPHING THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT.
AND HE SAID, YOU KNOW, THIS IS REALLY WHAT I WAS DOING THROUGHOUT MY CAREER.
I WOULD LOVE TO GET INVOLVED.
LET'S DO SOMETHING ON THE PROTEST PHOTOGRAPHY THAT I TOOK IN THE '60s.
WORK FROM HARLEM AND WASHINGTON, D.C. WITH VARIOUS STUDENT PROTESTS, YOUTH PROTESTS, THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON.
THAT'S ONE OF THE STRENGTHS OF FOTOGRAFISKA IS THAT WE CAN RESPOND PRETTY QUICKLY TO RELEVANT ISSUES AND STAY VERY CURRENT.
NAIMA GREEN IS ANOTHER GOOD EXAMPLE.
SHE IS A BROOKLYN BASED ARTIST, AND ALL OF HER PHOTOGRAPHS ARE OF THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY, MOSTLY PEOPLE OF COLOR.
MORE OF A CELEBRATION, THESE VERY SORT OF INTIMATE AND CAREFULLY CRAFTED PHOTOGRAPHS.
OUR WHOLE CONCEPT IS REALLY CATERING TO THE NEW WAY THAT WE FEEL THAT PEOPLE WANT TO VISIT MUSEUMS, WHERE IT'S A LITTLE BIT MORE EXPERIENTIAL, A LITTLE BIT MORE INTERACTIVE.
ON THE SIXTH FLOOR WE DO A LOT OF EVENTS AND PROGRAMMING.
ARTISTS TALKS, COSTUME PARTIES.
WE'VE DONE PERFORMANCE PIECES, CONCERTS, KIND OF PULLING FROM ALL THESE DIFFERENT AREAS, MAKE IT A LAYERED EXPERIENCE.
DURING THE PANDEMIC, WE DID TRANSITION A LOT OF OUR PROGRAMMING ONLINE, A LOT OF LIVE STREAMING EVENTS.
OUR FAMILY PROGRAMMING THAT USED TO TAKE PLACE INSIDE THE BUILDING WE'VE MOVED IT OUTSIDE WHEN WE CAN.
THIS IS REALLY GOING TO CHANGE THE WAY PEOPLE EXPERIENCE A MUSEUM OR FOTOGRAFISKA SPECIFICALLY.
I THINK WHAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO FOTOGRAFISKA IS BEING RELEVANT AND RESPONDING QUICKLY TO WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE WORLD.
WE REALLY WANT PEOPLE TO COME TO FOTOGRAFISKA AND SEE THAT SOCIAL RELEVANCE IN THE ART WORK THAT'S ON DISPLAY.
>> IN THE 1980s THE MTA WAS ON THE BRINK OF COLLAPSE.
IN ORDER TO REVIVE THE SYSTEM, THEY FOUNDED THE ARTS FOR TRANSIT PROGRAM.
AS PART OF THAT INITIATIVE, MUSIC UNDER NEW YORK WAS LAUNCHED IN 1985.
THERE ARE CURRENTLY MORE THAN 350 MUSICIANS AND GROUPS ON MUNY'S ROSTER WHO ARE GIVEN PRIORITY ACCESS TO THE BEST PERFORMANCE LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE TRANSIT SYSTEM.
WE'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO ONE OF THE PROGRAM'S MUSICIANS, IAIN FORREST, KNOWN AS EYE GLASSES IS A MEDICAL STUDENT AT MOUNT SINAI.
A CLASSICALLY TRAINED CELLIST HE HAS PERFORMED BOTH FOR PATIENTS AT THE HOSPITAL AND COMMUTERS IN THE SUBWAY.
HIS SOUND IS INSTANTLY RECOGNIZABLE THANKS TO HIS USE OF AN ELECTRIC CELLO AND HIS OWN UNIQUE REMIXES OF CONTEMPORARY POP MUSIC.
♪ ♪ >> I STARTED CELLO IN FOURTH GRADE WHEN OUR MUSIC TEACHER CAME AROUND WITH A CART OF INSTRUMENTS.
SO I PICKED UP THE CELLO AND I PLAYED THE FIRST NOTE, WHICH WAS A REALLY LOW, RESONANT NOTE.
I JUST LOVE THE SOUND OF THAT BASS NOTE.
BUT AFTER HIGH SCHOOL ME AND A FRIEND ACTUALLY WENT OUT TO THE STREETS OF WASHINGTON, D.C. AND WE STARTED PLAYING CONTEMPORARY SONGS.
AND I REMEMBER THE REACTION OF PEOPLE WALKING PAST ON THE STREETS.
IT STRUCK ME LIKE, HEY, THIS COULD BE REALLY SOMETHING SPECIAL HERE.
AFTER COLLEGE, I MOVED UP HERE TO THE NEW YORK CITY AREA FOR MEDICAL SCHOOL AT MOUNT SINAI.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT DREW ME TO NEW YORK CITY WAS OBVIOUSLY THE CULTURE THAT WE HAVE WITH THE ARTS.
AND AS SOON AS I CAME HERE, I SAW STREET MUSICIAN AFTER STREET MUSICIAN AND I IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT, THIS COULD BE MY NEXT HOME.
THAT'S WHEN I LOOKED UP MUNY, MUSIC UNDER NEW YORK, AND I FOUND THEY HAD A WHOLE AUDITION PROCESS.
SENT THEM AN APPLICATION.
DID THE AUDITION.
AND THANKFULLY, EVERYTHING WORKED OUT.
AND NOW I CAN CALL MYSELF A STREET MUSICIAN IN NEW YORK CITY.
THE REASON WHY I CHOSE "EYEGLASSES" IS BECAUSE OF TWO REASONS.
I WANT TO BE AN OPTHALMOLOGIST AND HELP PEOPLE SEE BETTER, SPECIFICALLY KIDS WHO LOTT THEIR VISION AT A YOUNG AGE.
THE SECOND REASON WHICH IS A BIT MORE LIGHT HEARTED IS BEETHOVEN WROTE A PIECE CALLED THE "EYE GLASSES DUET."
WHEN MUSICIANS SAT DOWN AND READ THE SHEET MUSIC IN FRONT OF THEM THERE WERE SO MANY NOTES ON IT, IT WAS SUCH A TRICKY, DIFFICULT PIECE TO PLAY IS THAT THE ONLY WAY MUSICIANS COULD READ THE MUSIC IS IF THEY WORE REALLY, REALLY STRONG GLASSES.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE STORY BEHIND THAT.
I TOOK INSPIRATION FROM THAT.
I PLAY THE ELECTRIC CELLO MADE BY YAMAHA AND IT'S THE EXACT SAME FOUR STRINGS AS AN ACCOUSTIC CELLO.

SO ESSENTIALLY WHAT I DO IS I'LL PLAY A BASS PART, PERCUSSIAN PART, HARMONY PART ON THE CELLO AND THEN I CAN LOOP THAT SEGMENT OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
SO ESSENTIALLY IT COMES DOWN TO I'M PLAYING NINE OR TEN DIFFERENT CELLO PARTS AT THE SAME TIME.
SO IT JUST OPENS UP A LOT OF DOORS AS TO WHAT I CAN DO MUSICALLY.
♪ I'VE HAD PEOPLE COME DOWN.
THEY COME OFF THEIR SUBWAY.
THEY COME UP TO ME LIKE WHERE'S THE ORCHESTRA?
AND I'M LIKE, NO.

AND THEN ONCE I'VE LISTENED TO IT A COUPLE TIMES I KIND OF EXTRAPOLATE IT OUT AND TRY TO CREATE, YOU KNOW, A CELLO RENDITION OF IT.
♪ AMONGST ALL THAT KIND OF CHAOTIC ENERGY WITH PEOPLE, YOU KNOW, BUSTLING AND CROWDS MOVING, I THINK THE BEST PART OF THAT IS JUST SEEING HOW THE MUSIC IMPACTS THESE PEOPLE WHO, YOU KNOW, EITHER HAVE THEIR HEAD PHONES ON, JUST WATCHING THEIR PHONE TRYING TO GET FROM POINT A TO POINT B AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE AND THEN JUST SEEING THEM BEING ABLE TO STOP AND ENJOY THE MOMENT FOR WHAT IT IS.
IN MEDICINE AND MUSIC, YOU REALLY HAVE TO CONNECT WITH THE HUMAN BEING SITTING IN FRONT OF YOU.
HELPING UP WITH THEM WITH MUSIC, I FIND IT ACTUALLY MAKES ME A BETTER MEDICAL STUDENT AND HOPEFULLY A BETTER DOCTOR DOWN THE ROAD, TOO.

IN THE 16th CENTURY ENGLAND, PORTRAITS RECORDED STATUS, LINEAGE, PIETY, AND POLITICAL AFFILIATION, AS WELL AS PHYSICAL APPEARANCE.
A SERIES OF EXCEPTIONAL PAINTINGS INTRODUCE AUDIENCES TO THE FIVE MONARCHS.
