COVID-19 case numbers have tanked in the U.S. -- and testing for the disease has plummeted, too. Far fewer people are lining up for PCR tests and many others are using home test kits for which results are not reported. There’s a lot less data to enable tracking of coronavirus variants by health officials, who are still trying to keep tabs on the virus, related trends and hot spots.
