G. Peter Jemison

G. Peter Jemison is Seneca of the Heron clan; Site Manager of the Ganondagan State Historic Site (Victor, NY); Faithkeeper to the Cattaragus Seneca Nation; and a member of the Haudenosaunee Standing Committee on Burial Rules and Regulations. He has also served as a Consultant to the Smithsonian Institute's Native American Museum Training Program, and to the National Endowment for the Arts.

"Ely Parker was a man of enormous intellectual capacity. He was capable of being an engineer. He was capable of being a lawyer, but he couldn't be admitted to the bar because he was a Seneca -- and I think that galled him deeply. He was first refused entry into the Army when he went to volunteer; same reason. So he had the ability to do so many different things, but perhaps, in the end, the seductiveness of the white mainstream drew him in. Those currents are so powerful!"
