WAYFINDING IMAGERY
Thu Jun 17 16:18:33 US/Eastern 1999

After viewing Wayfinders, I contacted Gail Evenari to aske for permission to use a segment of the video in a presentation that I was to make at a church conference. I am a pastor in the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. I had been asked to give a report called "The District Superintendent's Report" at the annual meeting of our church conference.
I heard a segment of the Wayfinders on Morning Edition. Then I watched the program. I found the segment where Nainoa Thompson is standing on the lookout point on Oahu and telling how Mau Pialug taught him about wayfinding to be a powerful statement about focusing on our mission. In fact there is a deep spiritual dimension throughout the video and the story that it tells.
I used the segment to remind my audience of about 1,000 West Ohio United Methodist pastors and laity about how we need to recover and focus on our mission as the church. "Keep the vision in your mind, if you lose that you'll be lost."
My report was very well received. I had a lot of favorable comments about it. Several persons asked me about the video and about wayfinding. I am grateful for what the Polynesian people have done to recover their heritage. I am thankful for Gail Evenari's work in helping the rest of us to learn about it.
