Santa Monica’s famed pleasure Pier
In 1893, the mile long wharf was built as the major port of call for
the bustling city of Los Angeles. It kept this title until 1903. In 1909,
the Santa Monica Pier, the oldest pleasure pier on the West Coast, opens
to an international crowd of enthusiasts. A number of pleasure piers
were built in the subsequent years and Santa Monica becomes a favorite
escape for Hollywood’s “A” list.
These pleasure piers fell into disrepair and are ultimately torn down
in the 1970’s. The Santa Monica Pier was saved in 1984 with voter
approval, and an aggressive $45 million pier restoration project began
that included refurbishment of the historic carousel.
