Discover what other purpose Hole 1 of Whitefish’s golf course
serves
Amazingly, it serves as an emergency landing strip for planes. The only
way you’d know that otherwise is you’re from Whitefish, or
(hopefully) you saw our episode on Whitefish.
In the late 1920’s, several citizens of Whitefish bought over
100 acres to create a golf course. They soon found they were going to
run out of money before the course was completed. A local politician
suggested applying for a federal grant for emergency landing fields which
they did. So, here along with hearing “four” you might want
to duck for cover if you hear “plane” .
The area is know for golfing and it has 8 Championship golf courses
and a 1,000 lakes in a 50 mile radius . Flathead Valley was selected
among the top “50 Greatest Golf Destinations in the World”.
