facts about Carlsbad Caverns National Park
Established
to preserve Carlsbad Cavern and numerous other caves within the Permian-age
fossil Capitan Reef, the park contains over 85 known caves, including
Lechuguilla Cave-the nation's deepest limestone cave at 1,567 feet (478m)
and third longest .
Life
in the park includes approximately 750 plant species, 331 species of birds,
64 species of mammals, and 44 reptiles and amphibians. Many species of
plants and animals in the park are at the limits of their geographic distribution,
including the northernmost colony of migratory cave swallows in the United
States.
The
temperature inside the cave is a constant 56 degrees. Remember to bring
some warm clothes even in the middle of summer, if you plan to have an
extended visit to the caverns.
