Born Rosa Delores Alverio in Humacao, Puerto Rico, Rita Moreno is the first actress to have won all four of the most prestigious show business awards: the Oscar, the Emmy, the Grammy and the Tony. Moreno won two Emmys - in 1977 for a variety of appearances on The Muppets, and in 1978 for a dramatic appearance on The Rockford Files. She earned an Oscar for her portrayal of Anita in the 1962 motion picture West Side Story; the Tony for her 1975 triumph as Googie Gomez in The Ritz; and the Grammy for her 1972 performance on The Electric Company album.
At the age of 13, Moreno made her Broadway debut in Skydrift, starring Eli Wallach. A talent scout arranged a meeting for the 17-year-old actress with Louis B. Mayer, who signed her to a contract with MGM and changed her name to Rita Moreno. She made 25 films in her early career including Untamed, Seven Cities of Gold, The Lieutenant Wore Skirts, Garden of Evil, and the beautifully acted feature role of Tuptim in The King and I (1956).
In 1962, Moreno moved to London where she was acclaimed in the production of She Loves Me and then returned to New York to star in The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window. On Broadway, she has also appeared as the female lead with Robert Shaw in Elmer Gantry and opposite James Coco in both The Last of the Red Hot Lovers and Wally’s Café. Her films since 1967 include The Night of the Following Day, Marlowe, Popi, Carnal Knowledge, The Ritz and The Four Seasons.
