The air war begins. The destruction of Baghdad's central telephone exchange in the first round of bombing takes nearly all television coverage off the air. Only CNN continues broadcasting live, through a special direct telephone line to Amman, Jordan, that is not routed through the regular Baghdad telephone network. Saddam Hussein orders all American journalists, except CNN, to leave Iraq.
