NATO begins three months of air strikes on Serbia, in an attempt to force an end to the ethnic conflict over Kosovo. Journalists, both professional and amateur, quickly harness the power of the Internet. American broadcast journalists find themselves pulling double-duty, filing online dispatches for their organizations' Web sites in addition to their regular video reports. When Belgrade independent radio station B92 is taken off the air by the Milosevic regime, it quickly reappears on the Internet. And hundreds of civilians report their experiences in the war zone on Internet message boards and chat rooms.
