April 17, 1945:Ernie Pyle is killed by a Japanese machine gunner while traveling with the U.S. Army's 77th Infantry Division at Ie Shima, just northwest of Okinawa. With Allied troops closing in on Berlin, Pyle had begun writing a column to commemorate victory in Europe. The unfinished draft was found in his cabin aboard the U.S.S. Panamint. Germany surrendered to Allied forces less than a month later, on May 8, 1945.
