June 10, 1898:U.S. troops land at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. The commanding general orders Richard Harding Davis, writing for the New York Herald, to remain on board the press boat. Davis convinces Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt to allow him to go ashore with Roosevelt's unit, the First Volunteer Cavalry. On July 1, Davis watches Roosevelt and his "Rough Riders" as they charge a key enemy position on Kettle Hill.
