June 13, 1971:
The New York Times begins publishing the Pentagon Papers, a leaked top-secret government study of U.S. military decision-making in Southeast Asia. As the Nixon Administration files suit against the Times to prevent further publication, other excerpts begin appearing in the Washington Post and other newspapers around the country. The legal battle ends just two weeks later, as the U.S. Supreme Court rules 6-3 that the government could not block publication of the papers.
