Iraq invades Kuwait. For nearly a month, Washington Post reporter Caryle Murphy eludes Iraqi forces before escaping to Saudi Arabia. Her reports from Iraqi-occupied Kuwait (many filed with the assistance of the Kuwaiti resistance, who had one of the few working telephones in the country) wins the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for International reporting.
