A videophone similar to the ones used in Afghanistan. October 7, 2001:
The U.S. launches airstrikes against Taliban targets in Afghanistan. CNN is able to provide live coverage of the bombings thanks to a "videophone," a lunchbox-sized device that allows video to be transmitted over a satellite telephone. The images are grainy and jerky, but videophones allow reporters to broadcast live from almost anywhere on the planet using a minimum of equipment, and other news organizations quickly begin using them.
