PHOTOS | Students protest against gun violence across the country

From California to Connecticut, thousands of students walked out of classrooms Wednesday to protest against gun violence.

The national walkouts were a sign of solidarity for students and staff at Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. A gunman killed 17 students and staff members at the Parkland school on February 14. Wednesday’s protests were slated to last for 17 minutes to honor each victim.

Some of the events' organizers told NBC News said the events were intended to bring attention to "Congress’ inaction against the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods."
