This Week on Washington Week: Stalemate Over Border Funding and President Trump Visits Iraq
President Donald Trump continues to criticize Democrats for the partial government shutdown. Talks to reopen the government remain stalled over the president’s demand for $5 billion to build a U.S.-Mexico barrier. The impasse has left about 420,000 federal workers working without pay and another 380,000 furloughed.
Iraqi lawmakers are looking to expel U.S. forces in the wake of President Trump’s surprise visit on Wednesday. They claim Mr. Trump violated Iraqi sovereignty during his three-hour visit to an airbase outside Baghdad. The trip came just a week after Mr. Trump announced his plan to pull all U.S. troops out of Syria. Trump defended his withdrawal plan telling the American forces serving in the combat zone that ISIS was defeated in Syria.
