Wikileaks founder Julian Assange indicted on 17 new charges under Espionage Act

It is apparently the first time the U.S. government has brought Espionage charges against someone who published classified information, as the charges are traditionally filed against government employees who legally possess classified information but illegally reveal it.

Julian Assange, the founder of the anti-secrecy organization WikiLeaks, was arrested this morning in London, seven years after taking refuge in an embassy there. The United States will seek his extradition on federal charges unsealed this morning in connection with an enormous leak of American intelligence nearly a decade ago.
