Click here for the text of this historical document. In "An Account of the Late Intended Insurrection Among a Portion of the Blacks of this City," Charleston Intendant (Mayor) Hamilton included a lengthy biographical sketch of Denmark Vesey, noting that he "has occupied so large a place I the conspiracy, a brief notice of him will, perhaps, be not devoid of interest."
Hamilton devotes nearly half of his description to Vesey's early connection to Santo Domingo, and "how near he was to the chance of being distinguished in the bloody events" there.
