In this interview, Dr. Mike Levine describes the pioneering phase of homeotic genes research, when it first became possible to isolate these genes and the techniques were discovered that made it possible to see where the genes were active in developing embryos. This work led to astonishing insights into the evolution of the genetic tool kit that determines the basic body plan in all animals, from earthworms to humans.
