    Nash and Sons...and Eliza

Kate Phillips in Miss Scarlet and The Duke Season 4

“A woman, no less, at the helm of London’s most esteemed private detective agency. Eliza Scarlet, Chief Investigator.” – Eliza

Season 4 kicked off with a new chapter for Eliza, who, at the end of Season 3, had finally caved to Nash’s offer to lead his London office and closed the door on her (formerly her father’s) small and struggling agency. The sparkling benefits of a larger staff,  plus more funds and resources at her disposal, seemed like a recipe for success…or was it? While Eliza tried to convince the outside world that business was thriving under her leadership, we quickly learned that that wasn’t exactly true. All of the staff, with the exception of disapproving accountant Clarence, quit and most clients left to look for help elsewhere, all because the new Chief Investigator was a woman. It seemed that while Eliza may have been ready for a new chapter, few others were on board.

    Going Across the Pond

    Stuart Martin as William

“I’ve been to see the Super and he’s agreed. I’m going to New York.” – William

After William had a terrifying brush with death in Episode 3, we found him alive and (mostly) well in Episode 4, convalescing at Eliza’s home under the watchful care of Eliza and Ivy. The shooting forced the usually tough, seemingly unbreakable Detective Inspector to take stock of his life — career-wise and personally — and reevaluate what he wants for the future. After having received a secondment opportunity in New York, the Duke had a monumental choice to make: to leave Scotland Yard and London (meaning Eliza, as well) or to stay? He at long last confessed his true feelings to Eliza, but at the same time, he also accepted the New York position, ready for a change — one he astutely guessed Eliza may not be ready to make with him.

    A Most Unexpected Crime

Felix Scott and Kate Phillips as Nash and Eliza in Miss Scarlet Season 4

“We’ll be back on course before you know it. With my good looks… and your brains…” – Nash

What happens when the crime solver becomes the criminal? Patrick Nash may have been known far and wide for toeing the line when it comes to following the rules, but in the finale, Nash became a wanted man in connection with the crime of all crimes — murder. But did he do it? Eliza raced the clock (or, rather, the police) to uncover the truth about what happened. As the case unraveled, Eliza learned that the deceased — Eamonn Murray — was an informant that worked for Nash.

As it turned out, Nash (thankfully) wasn’t the one to kill Eamonn. Instead, a man named Sean O’Driscoll was the one with Eamonn’s blood on his hands — as well as, we discovered, that of Nash’s brother Michael, who Sean killed years before. Eliza tracked down Sean and found that Nash had him tied up with a gun pointed at the man’s head, ready to take vengeance. Eliza talked Nash out of committing murder and facing life in prison (or worse), but a scuffle ensued. Sean aimed to stab Eliza, and Nash shot him, but (luckily) only struck the man’s shoulder. But while his shot may have been in self defense (and Eliza’s), Nash unfortunately still had to face the music for kidnapping and obstructing justice.

    Back to the Future

Kate Phillips as Eliza Scarlet reading her office sign in Miss Scarlet Season 4

    “It’s perfect.” – Eliza

After the unexpected twists and turns of Season 4, we found Eliza once again facing a life changing decision. With Nash in prison with a suspended private detective license, Nash and Sons closed its doors, leaving Eliza and Clarence without jobs. But if there’s one undeniable truth about Eliza Scarlet, it’s that she always lands on her feet, one way or another! The season ended with Eliza standing in front of her father’s office once again, watching as a new sign is added to the front — “Miss Eliza Scarlet, Private Detective” — making it officially her own.
