The Cast Reveals Their Hopes for Season 6

All Creatures Great and Small Season 6 has begun filming in the Yorkshire Dales! But back when MASTERPIECE asked the cast about Season 6, we were interested in what they hoped would lie ahead, as they hadn’t yet had a peek at the forthcoming scripts. So…romance for Mrs. Hall? The pitter-patter of little feet? Find out what the cast shared!

What Do You Hope for Your Character in Season 6?
Rachel Shenton: I really hope there’s some fun to be had for James and Helen, they’ve had such a stressful time of late and I hope now that James is home that they can enjoy family time and make space for a bit of fun. They’re both good at that.
Nicholas Ralph: What I personally hope for James in Season 6 is more of the same in that he grows into himself personally, professionally. I feel like James is at a building phase in his life, and has been for the last couple of years, in that he’s building the foundations on which to raise a family. So my hope for him is to continue that building of the foundations on which to raise his family. And obviously, around about this time, we all know that people had children earlier, and usually more than one, so if there was the pitter-patter of little feet once again…We’ll see about that!
Callum Woodhouse: I want Tristan to carry on exactly how he is—holding on to his spirit and his energy, but carrying on at times, pulling his socks up and getting his head down and focusing when something needs to be done. And standing up to Siegfried’s carrying on, but not in an aggressive or truanting way, just in a way of him knowing who he is, and in those times when he knows that he’s done a good job, then yeah, he can go down to the Drovers for the night, rather than slacking off in any way. And I’d like him to maybe find his Helen, which would be nice. We don’t know who’s that going to be, if it’s going to be someone we already know or if it’s going to be someone new. But I think he’s got a lot to give in that regard.
Samuel West: I would like it if Siegfried could find love. I think he deserves it, and you’d see things coming out of him that you won’t see otherwise. I think he wants to continue to grow the practice. He’s enormously proud of the fact that the top student in the year came to Skeldale, even though he was brilliant before he arrived. But he will take some credit for turning him into what he became. So on those three fronts—personal, romantic, and veterinary—progress, please.

What Do You Hope for the Skeldale House Extended Family?
Rachel Shenton: One of my favorite parts of filming is reading the scripts, not just for myself but also to see what all the other characters get up to. I particularly hope Tristan is causing mischief, and Mrs. Hall has a better time knowing everyone is safe and well. I also hope she finds romance. She deserves it, doesn’t she? I’m sure I’m with the viewers on that one. But overall, joy, laughter, and mischief. The last couple have years have been tough for the community, and I hope this year we can turn a corner and feel a little more light. I’ll wait patiently and see. I have every faith it will be brilliant. Finding out is just as exciting for us!
Callum Woodhouse: I would love Mrs. Hall’s relationship with her son to continue to flourish in whatever way that may be. I would love Tristan and Siegfried’s relationship to do the same again in whatever way that might be. They’ve had such amazing heart-to-heart moments and then they go back to the bickering and squabbling, which no one ever wants to do away with—it’s what makes those two characters so fun to watch, how the two of them are almost like a married couple. So I’d like to carry on with a lot of those types of silly arguments, but have them be less, few and far between, with more moments of love and tenderness between them.
For James and Helen, we know that from history that they have another child, so I’m looking forward to that being another element, having two babies on set. It’s funny because it sort of seems like James and Helen have got it completely made. They’re living the most blissful life ever, and it’s everyone else who needs a slice of what they have. They don’t need anything more—they’re golden, those two.
James Anthony Rose: I hope Siegfried and Mrs. Hall find companionship, and that Helen and James can have a night off together. Maybe Tristan and Carmody could babysit for them! As for Skeldale House and Darrowby, I hope that the effects of war don’t scar it too badly. But whatever it goes through, the hope is that it’ll make everyone stronger.
Anna Madeley: No one in the house really knows what’s going to happen with the war, but obviously, we want Tristan ultimately to be able to come home permanently and everyone to get back to normal life. So, for life to blossom. Perhaps Jim gets a sister. Who knows? More laundry.
