(bright chirpy music) - I got an interview.
- Darrowby.
Yorkshire!
- I was on holiday, actually.
Phone was in my bag.
I'd very little signal.
We stopped at an island for lunch, so.
Got my lunch out, checked my phone in case and I had a little bit of signal and then boom, boom, some messages came through.
So I phoned them and she said, yeah, she was like, "I wanted to call you just to congratulate you "on getting the part of James Herriot."
And I was like, "What!"
(laughing) - You've got a dream.
You've got to chase it.
- It's absolutely unacceptable that "All Creatures Great and Small" is Nicholas Ralph's first television job 'cause he's ridiculously good and he shouldn't be that good after so little practice.
- You dealt with many horses before?
- Yes, lots.
At veterinary college.
- What about in real world?
- This'll be my first.
I remember meeting Cal on the first day when we were doing some rehearsals so then that evening, we had a beer in the hotel and just a chat and I think I asked him every question under the sun about acting for screen and because he was in a very similar position to me.
- He was maybe slightly in my position of when I got "The Durrells."
It was his first foray into the television world but you'd never know.
He's been one of the most professional, hard-working guys I've ever worked with.
- By the end of the third day, it was like he'd been on set for 20 years.
It's extraordinary how hard he hit the ground running.
And we're all just in his wake now.
He's leading the company in a beautiful way.
- Woo!
- He's just so much fun on set.
He just loves every second of being in it and that is really infectious to everyone around him.
So yeah, it's just been such a pleasure working with him, it really has.
- We get on very, very well.
We laugh a lot.
It's very easy to be around Nick and I hope that transcends onto the screen as well.
Helen and James have a great time, it's very easy.
They like being in each others company so I think we do that quite well.
- The highlight of the experience so far, it's probably just meeting everyone, all the cast and the crew.
It's been a joy from start to finish.
