- Emma Chambers is played by Fiona Shaw who, if you know her work, speaks for itself.
- Fiona is absolutely charming and intelligent.
- She brings a kinda gravitas to the role.
- Casting Fiona Shaw as Emma Chambers was sort of, it was one of those ones where you send it out and you think, "Well, she'll say no, won't she?"
And then she didn't.
- We have got to find the body of my son and we've got to find the people who are holding Will.
- I think Jack and Harry have got a sort of Dickensian kind of ability to make stories weave one into the other.
- It's just a joy watching every day of rushes with her in it because she just delivers so much more than is on the page.
- One of the great pleasures of playing this whole six episodes has been spending time with Tcheky where the relationship between this ambassador and Julien Baptiste is both formal and incredibly intense.
It's both things.
- I'm asking you, consider, please.
There is no going back from this.
- I am not a child, get out of my way.
And that's been a really unusual thing.
You don't often actually get that to play on a television series.
- Acting with such a brilliant actress, it's a gift.
Fiona Shaw is very generous.
She gives a lot and she doesn't take the situation and what's written for granted.
- Couldn't imagine anyone else doing it, really.
- No, I think it's really interesting because she, a lot of the time when there's a, something like there's a tragedy's happened, and you're going to the police for help, it creates a very dependent relationship and I think what's good about Julien and Emma is they're sort of totally equals and she goes toe-to-toe with him and is incredibly intelligent, formidable, and capable, all of which Fiona is.
- She questions constantly the material and puts every moment at stake so it is very challenging to play with her.
- I've enjoyed very much being with him as he talks a lot about the new wave of French cinema that he was part of so I get the whole history of French cinema as well which I've very, very much enjoyed our conversations as we sit in cars endlessly, waiting for the next bit to happen.
