The Cast on Shaun Evans as Director
Season 6
short | 02:58 | CC
Shaun Evans' Endeavour co-stars divulge what it was like having Evans direct the Season 6 episode "Apollo."
(upbeat music) - Shaun loves television story telling.
And that really really shines through.
He is absolutely tuned in to every detail across the board.
- Mother died when he was young, father in the last two years.
Anything here?
- He was very very up on the script, and in command of the material.
- [Roger] Fun, but serious, which is always a wonderful combination.
- In the same way as his work as an actor, he's meticulous, well researched, and he's just got a lovely way about him with everybody, with the cast and with the crew as well.
- It just felt very natural to be honest with ya.
Because of the team, but you have a shorthand with the crew and also with the cast, and you know what it's about and the sort of shape of the show.
- I did an episode of Casualty that he directed, as did Caroline O'Neill actually.
He has a gentle, but very specific approach.
- The fact that he's such a fantastic actor, means that he understands actors.
But the fact that he was acting in almost every scene, and still doing a wonderful job directing, makes me think he's not human.
- And cut, let's get into the well please, my friends.
- If you know what Shaun's schedule is like, when he's acting on the show, morning 'til night, it is hard, hard work.
For him to have also taken on the directing, and then to have done it brilliantly, is absolutely astonishing.
(laughing) - Cut.
- He's an actor's dream really.
- You say your bit then I'll say my bit.
(laughs) - He doesn't waste time doing stuff that he knows he's not gonna use.
- [Shaun] And, cut.
- When it comes to doing our stuff, there's no one that knows it better.
There is such a thing as case confidentiality.
We can play with the beat.
It's lovely to get into his head as well.
- Well thank you very much for your help.
- What he thinks about, Joan and Morris, from a director's point of view.
- You always notice on jobs when it's a happy set.
And a happy team.
And it comes from the top.
- [Man] Down the set.
And action.
- He pulls everyone together and makes it feel like a big family and a bunch of friends, you know.
(cheering) - Guest actors who have come in say what a lovely job it is to do because everyone's having a great time, but focused on what we've got to do.
(yells) - Told you to stay in your cart.
(grunts) - The Endeavour family is real.
People come back year and year and year because they love it.
And that's again, a real testament to Shaun and everybody who kind of creates this really wonderful, special atmosphere on set.
- He's brilliant like that, yeah.
- [Man] I'm gonna start the car, 'fraid these boys are in deep.
- [Man] All right.
- He'll also bring you a cup of tea.
Best director in the world.
(laughs) (light music)
