- [David Oyelowo] A favorite scene of mine actually is where Jean Valjean goes to the courtroom to see this other person who has been accused of stealing from Petit Gervais.
And who is about to be imprisoned.
- Three of your fellow former prisoners, and a former guard of the prison, Inspector Javert, have identified you as the convicted felon and fugitive Jean Valjean.
- My character, Javert, is there and I'm basically set this trap.
- [Judge] Are you the felon Jean Valjean?
- Even though myself and Dominic West have several scenes that I enjoyed playing, which were very cat and mouse but they were verbal.
- You remind me of someone I used to know rather well at one time.
- What happens in this scene is that a lot of the communication and the jousting and the conflict in the scene between us is nonverbal.
- [Judge] Have you anything to say to the court that may help your defense?
And that to me is really what good storytelling, when it comes to the screen, is about.
And so I really enjoyed the challenge of that.
